Science
Estimated time
15 minutes
every Monday
Rationale
Healthcare professionals must have a comprehensive medical vocabulary in
order to communicate effectively with other health professionals. As a health

 Differentiate an acronym and an abbreviation
 Define and decipher various medical abbreviations and acronyms
 Implement medical abbreviations and acronyms in the health care
setting
Engage

read what it says?
Dx CHF, ADLs BR c BRP, vs q2h, valium 5mg po hs
BR c BRP, FFl qh, VS qid

Key Points
I.
Medical Terminology
A. To some it may seem like a foreign language, but it is much easier
to write using abbreviations than it is to write the corresponding
detailed messages
B. Universal: Used to convey the greatest quantity of information,
with the least confusion and the most precision, to any medical
professional in the world
C. The foundation of medical terms and abbreviations are Greek and
Latin -- 75% of all medical terms are based on Latin or Greek
terms
D. The Greeks were founders of modern medicine
E. Latin is the choice for medicine and science
F. The first medical dictionary appeared in the 1830s
1. The rapid increase in medical and scientific knowledge
necessitates a new medical vocabulary to describe it
2. It is impossible to learn all medical terms, but it is possible to

figure out their meanings by analyzing the word parts
3. By learning the meaning of the basic word parts, you will
frequently be able to interpret the meaning of a word
Etymology
1. The science of the origin and development of words
2. Helps you to find its origin and historical development
Eponyms
1. Words named after people
2. Parkinson’s Disease – PD named after the English physician
Dr. James Parkinson
Acronyms
1. Modern language terms that stand for longer phrases
Example: FROM – Full Range of Motion
Abbreviations
1. Shortened forms of words
Example: Abd - Abdominal
2. Used in many health fields
3. Can be upper case letters, lower case letters, or a combination
of them
4. Each medical facility has an approved abbreviation list
5. It is the responsibility of healthcare workers to learn the
meanings of the abbreviations used in the facility in which they
work
6. Refer to the abbreviation/acronym list
Activity
I. Complete Medical Abbreviations
Teacher Note: every Monday take the first 5-10 minutes of class to
give your students the Medical Abbreviations List on the board for
students to make flashcards or you can also orally read these out and
then give students a chance to guess the answer or just give them the
answer after you have given them the abbreviation. Every Friday, you
will then quiz over that week’s words. As you move forward with list
#2, #3, etc. the quizzes will build upon each other with words from
previous lists. For example, quiz #3 will have mostly words from that
list, but some questions may be from #1 or #2. After every 3 Medical
Abbreviation Lists and quizzes there will be a Medical Abbreviations
Test; therefore, no new Medical Abbreviation list should be given that
week. With 24 Medical Abbreviation Lists this should take you the
entire school year allowing you to do Medical Abbreviations all year
instead of just a few days or one week.
