(give students time to respond... you are looking for them to name departments stores, specialty stores, and designers) SAY: Fashion design in the United States is big business and people are always in need of clothing. The fashion industry is ever evolving but will always be here out of necessity. Outline MI Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes: 1. Identify and discuss some of the major companies in the fashion industry. A. Cover their market shares and basic customer profiles. B. Address their price points. a. Budget b. Department store c. Fast fashion d. Ready-to-wear e. Bridge f. Designer g. Couture Remember to cover all of the price points. 2. Research the history of a company. A. What are some trends that have been happening in the company? B. How long have they been around? C. What is the company philosophy? D. Where do they fit within the fashion price points? Household income 4. Education 5. Geographic location B. Reviewing company ads Remember larger companies will use different ad companies for different areas. Principles of design (covered in a previous lesson): Balance, Proportion, Emphasis, Unity and Variety, and Rhythm. Presentations can be a combination of board and electronic or one or the other. Application MI Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Teacher will go over the slide presentation with the class to address the instructional outline. MI Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Students will be broken up into small groups to create a visual presentation covering the following areas: 1. A fashion company; 2. The history of that company; 3. The traditional costumer of that company; 4. Current company trends; 5. Careers available within the company find three one for each level; and 6. Qualifications needed for each career. Summary MI Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Use this time to review parts of the project. MI Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Students will present their company research projects to classmates (whole class). Have students use rubrics to reflect on their own work and the work of others. The teacher will assess each final company project using the attached rubric. Extension MI Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Students can do an informational interview with someone in the fashion industry. Students will use information for future projects. Once you have decided on a company you will research the history of that company. Using that same company, you will research the company’s core customer utilizing demographics. You will also research the company’s current trends in clothing as well as marketing. Using the company, you will find three careers within that company at each level (entry, mid-level, executive). For each career you will determine the qualifications needed. You will create a group presentation using digital, traditional, or a mixture of both materials describing: The company you chose The company’s customer Current trends in fashion Current trends in marketing Careers at the company Qualifications needed for each career Bibliography of resources You will be evaluated on the completeness and the accuracy of your information as well as your oral presentation.
