Lesson Plan Course Title: Construction Technology Session Title: Standard Measurements Performance Objective: Upon completion of this assignment, the student will be able to use a standard ruler to measure. Specific Objectives: • Divide the one inch unit into 1/16th of an inch segments. • Simplify fractional values. • Sequence in ascending order fractional values between 0 and 1. • Apply these concepts to a tape measure. Preparation TEKS Correlations: This lesson, as published, correlates to the following TEKS. Any changes/alterations to the activities may result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed. 130.54. Building Maintenance Technology (c) Knowledge and skills. (2) Students will understand all aspects of contract documents, including architectural, engineering and shop drawings and interpret, describe and identify: (a) types of drawings usually included in a set of plans and list the information found on each type; (b) lines used on construction drawings; (d) architectural symbols commonly used to present materials on plans; (e) abbreviations commonly used on plans; (f) plans, elevations, schedules, sections, and details contained in basic construction drawings. Interdisciplinary Correlations: Mathematics: 111.36(c)(1)(A) student uses a variety of strategies and approaches to solve both routine and nonroutine problemsincluding compare and analyze various methods for solving a reallife problem; Instructor/Trainer References: Prentice Hall, Core Curriculum Trainee Guide http://themathworksite.com/ Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): SAY: Does anybody know how to read a tape measure? ASK: Who knows why there are different sized lines on the tape measure? (If anyone claims to know then have them recite all 16 values.) Tell a story about when you have had to communicate a measurement to someone who was helping you on a task. INCH C. Standard Fractions 1. Values 2. Simplify D. Place fractions in proper sequence. 1. Students fill in measurement graph on the chalkboard. 2. Students will fill in Measurement Worksheet. 3. Students will place Measurement Cards in proper order in a timely fashion. E. Apply concept to measurements. 1. Students will measure pre-cut boards for accuracy. Application Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): 1. Teacher will demonstrate the proper placement of the values on the Measurement graph. 2. The students will place the proper values with peer help if needed. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): 1. Students will fill out the measurement worksheet. (From Coastlink web site) 2. Students will compete with others to place the measurement cards in the proper order in the least amount of time. 3. Students will measure pre-cut boards of various lengths and record their results. Summary Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Who can list the basic standard units of measurements (Mile, Yard, Foot, Inch, 1/16th inch)? Why do we have different measurement units (To reach the level of accuracy you desire)? Who can list all 1/16th inch fractions between 0 and 1? Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): The teacher will monitor student progress during guided practice and provide assistance when needed. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved. 3 Evaluate the accuracy of the measurement of the pre-cut boards. Give the students a written Tape Measure Exam. Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): The students that have mastered the skills can be encourage to offer peer tutoring in this skill not only during this time frame but throughout the future. This is an overlap to their math skill. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved. 4 Tape Measure Worksheet Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011.
