Lesson Plan Course Title: Construction Technology Session Title: Avoiding Shocks Time: 4-6 Hours [Lesson length is subjective and will vary from instructor to instructor] Performance Objective: Demonstrate electrical safety through testing and by making sure the power is off. Specific Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson, the learner will be able to: • Select the proper electrical tester for your job. • Describe how to use each tester • Demonstrate using the tester Preparation TEKS Correlations: This lesson, as published, correlates to the following TEKS. Any changes/alterations to the activities may result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed. 130.55. Advanced Building Maintenance Technology (2) Students will know electrical safety regulations and safety guidelines (a) demonstrate safe working procedures during building maintenance; (b) explain the purpose of the OSHA and how to promote safety on site; (c) identify electrical hazards and how to avoid or minimize them on site; and (d) explain safety issues concerning lockout and tagout procedures, personal protection using assured grounding and isolation programs, confined space entry, respiratory protection, and fall protection. Interdisciplinary Correlations: This lesson, as published, correlates to the following TEKS. Any changes/alterations to the activities may result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed. Show PowerPoint Bring in various types of testers for students to view. Instructors can use the PowerPoint presentation, B. and weblink in C. in conjunction with the following. Outline A. Safety first B. List testers Discuss various types of injuries from electrical shock Think of having a student assistwith demonstrating. Give students assisting extra credit. III. Demonstrate each tester IV. Break into groups for testing III. Review steps and problems encountered Think of a local construction expert, electrician or builder who can come in and speak to your class about electrical safety on the job. Application Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): One of two students assist instructor with demonstration. Then break into small groups to test. Have students spot-check each other to make sure they are following procedures. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Use this time to evaluate the students and to check their understanding of the lesson as presented to them. Spending extra time at this point with the group or student that is not understanding, will help in the final formal grading phase. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): The informal assessment starts when the class begins watching the PowerPoint presentation and continues through to include participation in class discussion, guided and independent practice sessions involvement and participation, review and application. Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Each phase will have a percentage factor assigned to it resulting a 100% when all totaled: 25% -- Classroom and review involvement 50% -- Guided and independent practice 25% -- Authentic assessment Rubric presents a basis for grading student work and performance for the authentic assessment piece. Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Learners can use this information for a variety of purposes in the future in keeping safe at work, and home. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. Failure to follow safety precautions will result in automatic failure and the learner must go through all the safety precautions and steps to completion before testing again.
