Congratulations COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL • Students were treated to an excellent Celtic performance by a group called "The Ecclestons." The Ecclestons provided traditional Celtic music in a more modern context and involved the entire student body in the performance. Students enjoyed participating in the performance and the easy-going professional manner of the players. This performance was provided as one of several that the school district sponsors during the year. At the end of the performance, along with the usual questions of "How long have you been together?" and "When did you start playing the guitar?" etc., one student asked them if they could play a tune called "Smoke on the Water" by the Heavy Metal group "Survivor." They immediately responded by playing a superb rendition, much to the surprise of everyone. To top it off, it was discovered that one of the players was a professor at the University of Victoria and that she had made the history of "The Beatles" an area of study. As a result of this discovery, everyone was serenaded out of the gym to the tune of "I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends". This group was outstanding and completely student-focused. • Once again, Columbia was lucky enough to have a visit from "Sparky", the Fire Safety Dog. Sparky visited students to share information about how to get out of a burning home safely. Later in the month student names will be drawn for prizes from those students who entered the Penticton Fire & Rescue Safety Contest. We will keep you posted. Prizes include being taken on the fire truck to a luncheon at the Fire Hall, two tickets to the Penticton Vees, and a family pizza feed at Panago Pizza. Wow! -3- • Congratulations to all of the grade 3-4-5 students who took part in the Carmi run on Thursday, October 19th. Columbia students, as always, had a good deal of fun and represented themselves well. • Columbia students were recently seen, all of them getting ready for Halloween. Little goblins and gremlins were all about, little fairies and princesses, you know what it's about. Little pumpkins and pirates were giving it their best, and all of them passed the Halloween test. Now, my friends, let's get on with the show. -4- GIANT’S HEAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL • • Students and parents ran in support of Terry Fox and raised $648.64 for donation to cancer research. Well done!! The first annual “Walk to School” day took place October 4. Students were encouraged to walk, jog or ride a bicycle to school. As well, buses let students off a safe distance from the school so they could participate as well. Muffins and a juice box were offered to students as they arrived at school. • Grade 3’s Tour a Piece of Summerland’s Paradise If you wanted to be surrounded by huge trees, hundreds of interesting plants and a canyon view that would make your heart beat wildly, where would you go? Well, just ask the grade three students from Giant's Head School! Students and their teachers headed to the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. Their goal was to learn more about plants that grow in the Summerland area. The study of plants is a big focus in the science curriculum so the Gardens were an excellent choice as a destination. Once at the Gardens, the students were met by three volunteers from the Friends of the Gardens society. Karen Taylor toured one class through the tall trees in the upper garden and down along the canyon path. Students were impressed by the tall Ponderosa pines and the beauty of the canyon, the creek and the "trestle". Another group followed them into the xeriscape garden. Students were impressed to learn these plants could grow all summer long with very little extra watering. They got to feel the soft velvet leaves of the Lamb's Ear plant and to listen to the wind in the Trembling Aspen grove. As junior scientists they observed insects, a dead snake, very lively squirrels, and even bear scat. Linda Sears headed the tour of the Superintendent's house. The students were impressed by the beauty of the old building. They saw antique office equipment as well as lots of equipment that would have been used in the early days of the Research Station. It was interesting to see the old black and white photographs of the Research Station. The apple trees were much taller back then and the irrigation water moved in a wooden flume ... it was all very strange! A visit to the house would not be complete without a trip to the bug room. If you have ever wondered what those big green tomato horn worms turn into, ask the Grade threes - they know! After going on each of the three tours, the students, teachers and parent volunteers enjoyed lunch at the Gardens. With the warm temperatures and the beautiful setting it was a perfect place to dine out. The students had a little time for sketching and then they all boarded the bus for the trip back to school. It had been a fun and eventful day. Many students visiting the Gardens for the first time pledged they would be asking their moms and dads to make a return visit some time soon • The Special Events boys helped promote the school’s UNICEF fund raising campaign with their well prepared announcements of encouragement. To date the school has raised over $1200.00 with more money to be collected and counted. The generosity of the community shines when it comes to helping others in need. -5- • • • For the last two years Mrs. Krieger has been training groups of grade 4’s in peer mediation and problem solving skills. The grade 4’s become peer mediators during their grade 5 year. The peer mediators wear bright orange vests on the playground at recess and lunch, so they are visible. If other students have problems that they wish to solve, they come to a pair of peer mediators and ask for help. Peer mediators have been trained in a step by step problem solving method that helps students learn to solve their own problems, and eventually become independent in this area. Peer mediators are a great asset to Giant’s Head School, and we thank them for their time and effort. Peer mediators volunteer to problem solve during one recess and lunch over a two week period. The recently held Book Fair was extremely successful! The profits from the Book Fair will be used to purchase a little over $3000 worth of books from Scholastic for the library. The 24 volunteers are to be commended for their support with this very valuable fundraiser. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Naramata Run. HOME LEARNERS’ PROGRAM • Students from the Home Learners’ Program participated in an exciting field trip to Mascot Mines in Hedley. Students from kindergarten through grade nine took a walk into the past as they tackled over 500 steps down a mountain to learn about the early days of mining in Hedley. Although the climb up was a challenge, the consensus was that this was a great learning experience that many would like to repeat! -6- KALEDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Some of October’s highlights include: • • • • • • • Giving Thanks Assembly, followed by turkey lunch for students and parents. Encounters with Canada is a one-week program of Canadian Studies held at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa. The program period extends from early Autumn to late Spring; over 130 high school students per week come from across the country to the Nation's Capital for a "once in a lifetime" opportunity. Now does that sound fun or what? Encounters with Canada's objective is to bring young Canadians from different backgrounds and regions together in order to give them an opportunity to learn about one another, to discover their country through each other, and to gain a better understanding of Canadian Institutions. • Students have been enjoying various field trips including great trips to Bamfield (Biology), Ashland (Acting and Drama), Victoria (Civics), and Japan – a trip of a lifetime. A group of about 20 Penticton and Summerland high students joined a recent delegation visit to Japan. Penticton has a sister city relationship with Ikeda, while Summerland has a similar link with Toyokoro, Japan. After spending three days in Tokyo, the students traveled to Ikeda, a farming community on the northern island of Hokkaido. The students all stayed with host students in the Ikeda area – many of whom visited Penticton last January. -9- TROUT CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL • It has been a busy, productive month for staff, students and parents at Trout Creek.
