School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extends congratulations to the following students/groups for these
outstanding examples of success for May:
KALEDEN ELEMENTARY
•
Hearts@ School at Kaleden Elementary!
On May 12th Hearts @ School visited Kaleden Elementary. The kids spent the
morning rotating through the various stations. In this picture students are learning to
juggle. Students also learned about healthy food choices, sun safety, tae kwon do
and the dangers of smoking.
•
Kaleden Elementary Talent Show
On the evening of May 6th Kaleden Elementary held a talent show in conjunction with
the PAC barbeque. While families and community members enjoyed their dinner,
the students provided the entertainment. Some of the special talents included:
singing, dancing, piano, violin, magic and even hockey skills. The night was a huge
success and there are plans on making this an annual event.

KVR MIDDLE SCHOOL
•
Two KVR students attended the National Science Fair in Ontario last month.
Admin of Canada-Wide Science Fair winners included:
Megs Cumming and Breanna Gowe - KVR Middle (Need 4 Speed) won an
Honourable Mention ($100)!
McNICOLL PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL
•
McNicoll Park Middle School showcased it’s ‘McNicoll's Got Talent’ and had 16 acts
perform. It was a well run event put on by students.
•
They also had their track and field fun day where students performed very well.
PARKWAY ELEMENTARY
•
The student led assembly was very successful and the Parkway Elementary new school
Code of Conduct was launched by their student leadership group.
•
The school held their school wide runs on Monday and Wednesday this month. The crosscountry team has been practicing hard!
•
Tuesday was ‘Character Dress Up Day’ at the school and the costumes were great! Lots of
House Team points were given away!
•
The children in Mrs. King’s grade 1 class have enjoyed working with Deb Lougheed every
Thursday. Deb is the Activity Coordinator from the Concorde Assisted Living Residence. In
February she went to Belize and had contact with a grade 1 class in a village on the coast.
Parkway’s grade 1 students have each received a pen pal. Students that participated wrote
to these children (they also included a photograph of themselves), then Deb took the
mail with her to Belize. The students also watched some YouTube videos of what life is like
in their village. It has been very interesting for them all. As well, the children have seen the
poor conditions these people live in but as Deb mentioned to the students, they are very
happy. This week the grade 1 students received letters back from their pen pals. They were
very pleased and excited to get mail! It has certainly been a unique experience for all the
students.
•
Two great school wide runs were held this week and the cross-country team took part in the
Kaleden Run. Parkway took 24 grade 4/5 students to the run and they all showed excellent
effort, sportsmanship and behavior. Many students achieved their personal best! The top
runners were:

Parkway hosted the Year End Celebration for the Aboriginal students. The turnout was
excellent as many parents came out to watch their children receive their certificates.
•
The cross-country team Fun Run finale was held this week. All of the runners received
school ribbons and lots of applause from the entire student body! Great year!!!
•
The Big Brother and Big Sister organizers hosted a Year End Celebration for the students
that have participated in the program all year long!
•
Five of the classes took in the Children's Festival and had a great time! The tickets and
busses were all donated.
PRINCESS MARGARET SECONDARY SCHOOL
•
Sahil Sidhu, a Grade 11 Princess Margaret Student competed in the Skills
Canada Competition on Wednesday April 21, 2010 and came in 3rd place.
This was a provincial competition for Mechanical CADD (Computer Aided Design
and Drafting). Sahil competed against other students from all across the
province in Abbotsford on April 21, 2010. The competition consists of a
complicated design problem which they must complete in three hours.
Sahill is looking forward to next year’s competition as he goes for the Gold!
Allison Collingwood also competed in the competition for Graphic Design and
did very well for her first time.
Both contestants were students in Mr. Whiteley’s Drafting and Visual Media Arts
classes at Princess Margaret Secondary School.
Skills Canada BC is an affiliate of the organizers of the Canadian Skills
Competition, an annual event. The Canadian Skills Competition is an Olympicstyle competition which showcases students’ technical and leadership skills where
students from across Canada will compete against each other.

Princess Margaret
PENTICTON SECONDARY SCHOOL
•
The Penticton Secondary School recycling team has finished in 6th place in BC and has just
donated $1000 to their Lunch Box Program which provides meals for needy students.
Special thanks to Cheryl Penrice and her students for their leadership with this program.
•
High Five a Track star when you see one! The PSS Track and Field Team performed
exceptionally well at the Senior Valley's in Kelowna in the liquid sunshine! Students
qualifying for Provincials are:

Penticton Secondary’s tennis team will finish in the top 8 at the BC's! Julianna Kaiser and
Courtney Milligan played the match of their lives and won 7-5 in the tiebreaker. They’re
guaranteed a top 8 finish! Great News!

The Senior Boys’ Track Team placed 2nd in the Okanagan Valley Championships!
SKAHA LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
•
On May 5th, 30 students attended the Shakespeare Festival at Summerland
Secondary.
•
On May 5th, Skaha Lake joined Princess Margaret on the Annual Muscular
Dystrophy Walk and contributed $1300.00 from the Carnival fundraiser.
•
On May 6th, a number of SLMS students, sponsored by Mr. Kroschinsky
raised money for the Brain Injury Society by holding a “12 Hour Long Board
Relay” at Skaha Lake Park in conjunction with Youth Week. Youth Week
volunteers from Princess Margaret also came to Skaha Lake and hosted a
giant “Simon Says” game in the gym. This was the MOGA (Most Outrageous
Group Activity) event for Youth Week.
•
On May 11th-13th the grade 8 leadership students hosted their first ever
“Skalympics” for all classes. This was an Olympic-themed school spirit event.
•
On May 17th-19th, Daryl Meyers from Pathways Addiction Resource Centre
spoke to the grade 6 and 7 classes about the dangers of crystal meth and to
the grade 8 classes about the dangers of ecstasy.
•
On May 19th, SLMS hosted the Zonal School Planning Council meeting in the
library.
•
May 26th-29th, the grade 8 band class took a trip to Edmonton where they
will play 3 concerts and attend the Alberta Science Centre as well as the West
Edmonton Mall. This will be many of the students’ first chance to travel
through the Rocky Mountains where they will see Banff on the way to
Edmonton and Jasper on the way home.

UPLANDS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Here are the Highlights of Uplands Elementary:

Grade 2/3 Basketball Program: after school with Pen High coach, Doug Scotchburn.

Grade 4/5 Track and Field Practices.

Accelerated Readers (Awarded with T-Shirts for earning over 100 points!)
•
Hot Lunches and Fruit and Veggies Program.
•
School Inquiry with Writing and Social Responsibility Action Plans.

School Inquiry Growth Plan Presentation for SPC on May 17th
o (Improvements in both writing and social responsibility demonstrated ☺)
•
Team Teacher Inquiry Presentation on May 11th (using a strategy from SMARTLearning)

Many Mothers’ Day teas/performances.
•
Grade 4/5 Powerpoint Presentations: Division 2, Grade 4/5 student created informative and
interesting Powerpoints on country/cultures in Canada or Aboriginal groups and presented them. Many
parents also came out to see their Powerpoints on May 12th and we enjoyed a multicultural feast, too!
•
Playground Activities (as part of Daily Physical Activity): Students regularly take part in grade 5
student led playground activities such as skipping, four squares, hopscotch, wall ball, tag and an
obstacle course. Great to see students having fun and practicing social responsibility!
•
Cross Country Running: Cross country running is happening almost every day for the cross country
team and/or whole school. Grade 3 students attended West Bench Run on May 11th and grade 4 and
5 students attended the Kaleden Run on May 21st. The school did very well overall and two of the girls
placed first in their category!
•
Gymnastics: During the last two weeks in April and first week in May, the gym was set up in station
format for the students to learn gymnastics skills.
•
“Let’s Go Fly a Kite ☺”: On April 27th, Wayne and Jennifer Pattison (kite presenters), came to the
school to do a kite presentation and help students (grades 1-5) construct kites.
•
SMARTBoard: The wonderful PAC will be providing the school with SMARTBoard, laptop and LCD
projector – many, many thanks PAC.
•
Professional Development continues: Kindergarten Workshop on May 14th, excellent
SMARTBoard workshop on May 20th, and SMARTLearning Facilitators training on May 26th.

WILTSE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A highlight worth sharing that was passed on by Principal, Cathy Bowles by those noted
below:
We began the program, ‘Parents as Literacy Supporters’, in the Fall of 2006
after attending The PALS Institute for training. We were very excited about offering
this program to our Kindergarten parents because we saw this as a way to reach out
to our community especially our ‘English as a Second Language’ families, in an
interactive & fun way. We held 5 sessions this year to highlight important areas of
learning: “ABC’s & Learning”,“Early Math”, “Learning to Write”, “Riddles, Raps &
Rhymes” and our “Celebration” which focused on Physical Development & Outdoor
Play.
After each session, the child takes home a goodie bag which always includes
a good quality book connected to our themes, plus games and activities for parents
to do with their child at home. Feedback from our parents and students is very
positive. Here are some quotes from parents that were written on their evaluation
forms:
“Excellent, informative and fun”,
“Great opportunity to interact with other parents and to see my child in a social environment”,
“I really liked coming to school & spending one-to-one time together with my child”,
“Great ideas to encourage parents to participate in their child’s learning”.
Our hope is that the PALS program at Wiltse will be able to continue. Many
thanks to the Wiltse PAC who have supported this program from the beginning.
