The Grade 4 classes are participating in cross-country Skiing at Nickel Plate. Everyone at Giant’s Head School offers a huge thanks to their PAC for funding this valuable program. Basketball season was a big success. The teams had great games with Trout Creek, Wiltse and Uplands Schools. It was great to see the students improve their skills over the course of the season. Giant’s Head Elementary joined 1200 Summerland residents in a “Summerland Is Bully Free” flash mob. The BC Lions visited the school and gave an interactive presentation on energy conservation. It was a big hit with both teachers and students. It’s official… we are half way through the school year! The primary classes (with the assistance of the Grade 5’s) celebrated 100’s Day with a numeracy themed day. Finally, on February 20th, Staff and Students were involved in a school-wide Student Led Conference. It was amazing to see kids guide their parents through their learning. It is amazing to see how far kids have come over the course of the year – that’s a Success! Success Stories Giant’s Head Elementary Continued... McNicoll Park Middle Valentine’s Day Dance Food Drive put on by Leadership students brought in five boxes of non-perishable food! Hailey Lund and Brittani Miller were the organizers. McNicoll Park Middle School’s band applied for and received a $5,000 grant from MusiCounts which will be used for new instruments!!! McNicoll Park Middle School students have read 80,000,000 words over 2,034 books, an average of 10 books per student! The Grade 8 students have just completed a math project developed by teacher Nick Korvin where the students design their own store and completed business plans that required the math teachers to approve business start up. Michele Carriere Blaize Gould Parkway Elementary A wonderful hot lunch was served on Friday! Thank you to Kelly and her crew! Members of the Penticton Vees were their guests at the monthly assembly and they spoke about the game and the chance to win money for the Breakfast Club! Parkway has a new Facebook Web Page! Thanks Aaron and Michael! Parkway’s two basketball teams practiced this week and then played a game against the West Bench Elementary team. Everyone had a super week and the skill level is getting better every day!! Thanks to the wonderful coaches and parent supporters at Parkway! The Kindergarten teachers held the second ‘Ready Set Learn’ of the year and the turn out was great. Parkway had over 20 youngsters and their parents attend. Success Stories S Parkway Elementary Continued... The PAC meeting on Monday night was well attended and the PAC approved another $1500 for books for the Grade 3 students. The school choir now has over 60 students signed up and they practiced again on Tuesday. Mrs. Zaugg is thrilled with their progress! The Lego Club met on Tuesday and Thursday and the teams have been set and the projects have started. Thank you to Eric and the other parent volunteers. Friday is Jungle gym day and the students had a great time playing in the gym! Skaha Lake Middle On February 1st, Grade 8 students went to Maggie to attend the annual “elective fair” where Maggie staff described different elective course offerings to the students. Students will also be doing their course selections for Grade 9 later this month. Students from the grade 7 classes are once again participating in the “Young Entrepreneurs” program better known as “Dragon’s Den”. Okanagan College “Enactus” business students are mentoring the students in product innovation, marketing, promotion and finance. The Grade 7 students are participating in the annual Ski/Snowboard program with three dates in February for students to try a new activity or improve their skills. Drama students attended the Summerland Secondary production of “Hairspray” on February 13th at the Summerland Centre Stage Theatre. This turned out to be a huge motivator for the young actors and actresses as many plan to continue on at the secondary level. Parent teacher interviews were held on February 19th and 20th to mark the half way ppoint of Term 2. This allows plenty of time for students, teachers and parents to pl plan for success prior to report cards going home at spring break. Nine staff from Dr. Knox Middle School in Kelowna visited SLMS on February N 2 21st. Dr. Knox is striving to become more “middle school” and they were interested in the timetable, interdisciplinary opportunities, explorations program, student groupings and the role of the teacher librarian at the school. to Success Stories Skaha Lake Middle Continued... On February 26th, SLMS will hold their annual Science Fair” for all Grade 6 students. Projects will be chosen to represent the school at the district level later in March. Pink Shirt Day is February 27th and Skaha Lake will be holding their first ever “We Day”. Speakers and entertainers have been assembled for the two hour show put on by the “Me to We” leadership group. Anti-bullying and global awareness of social issues will be the main theme of the show. Through a Different Lens Project Columbia l Elementary The Through a Different Lens (TADL) project is in its' second year in SD67. Columbia school has been involved since the beginning and participation in this exciting project has grown to 5 teachers at Columbia school. TADL is about meeting the needs of all learners to help the at-risk students re-engage with school and be more successful. It is about making learning more active and fun for all involved. Columbia Elementary has seen the huge benefits for their students academically, socially, and emotionally. It is also a lot more fun for the teachers involved. A significant professional benefit is the opportunity to meet, plan, and share with other educators. This collaborative effort is a wonderful experience and leads to promising things for the students. TADL encourages innovative, creative ways of helping the students learn and enjoy school at the same time. It is exciting to see the success of the TADL project and look forward to continued progress and success for Columbia students! Success Stories Summerland Middle Serves up Treats with Message of Goodness Grade 6’s from Ms. McElhinney’s class helped remind the students of Summerland Middle School that Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) can take place each and every day! February 11th to February 15 th was Random Acts of Kindness week, and to promote this important theme, students from 6-3 presented on the announcements, made posters of awareness, displayed acts of kindness (Mr. Chadburn, their custodian was very appreciative of your help with school clean-up!), and held a bake and float sale (all proceeds going to Free the Children). Each cup had a positive message written on it. (i.e, “You’re Awesome!”). In addition, students visited the Summerland Extended Health Care Centre and made a Valentines craft with the Senior residents. Way to go students from 6-3!! Success Stories Summerland Middle Continued... Capital One Rocks & Rings Program On Friday, February 15th, the Capital One Rocks & Rings Program visited Summerland Middle School for a full school day. They took over the gym as classes took turns visiting for 40 minutes sessions of fun and instruction. Various drills, relays and teambuilding activities were used to introduce students to the sport of curling. It was a highly interactive program with the emphasis on fun! Success Stories Princess Margaret Secondary Grade 11 student, Giorgia Ricciardi has been selected to be the Okanagan representative on the UN Pilgrimage for Youth held July of every year. She will join over 200 students from around the world in an all-expense paid tour of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York (including the UN) and Ottawa. On Feb. 27 Sun FM broadcast their morning show live from Princess Margaret to recognize anti-bullying day. On that day band students play, videos and information was shared ~ many students demonstrated their awareness by wearing pink shirts. This student driven event was framed with the idea that to combat bullying, people need to seek ways to be kinder to each other. They declared the week of Feb. 25 - March 1 Random Act of Kindness Week. Wiltse Elementary Mr. Kopf's Grade 1 Class had a "Somebody Loves You" Lemonade and Brownie Sale and raised $243.56 for the cost of a $500.00 water pump of a village in Africa. What a great success! Wiltse School Community, led by the ‘WE DAY’ Team, raised over $260.00 in pennies. Staff and students collected nine (9) bags of pennies, each containing 2500 pennies as well as some silver for the Free The Children "We Create Change" program. Wiltse Elementary students and staff wore orange and played host to three BC Lions players and the Fortis BC Energy Champions. Students, parents and staff re-visited 10 energy saving tips in a "game' like atmosphere. The ten energy saving tips were: 6. Wash clothes in cold water 1. Put on a sweater 7. Fill the dishwasher 2.
