Principals Message:
Greetings to all CK families! We are in full swing with the new school year at CKHS,
and as we enter the fall season, we hope that you are experiencing a school that is
Dedicating itself to Excellence! Traffic issues from the addition of 9th graders and
portables remain a challenge for us at CK, and we hope that your routine with students coming to and from CKHS has developed into a working system. Please remember to drop off and pick up in the Staff and Senior lot (Anderson Hill Rd. side)
during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times. As the days grow shorter,
please be vigilant in and around CK parking lots for safety. The addition of 9th graders has been a great success for us all here, but it requires a little patience and for
families and students to follow the traffic regulations. We are appreciative of you recognizing that.
There were a lot of changes last year, but one thing that has not changed for over a
decade and a half is that CKHS continues to be one of the nation’s top 2% of all public high schools in the nation and ranked #6 in the State of Washington, according to
the Washington Post. CKHS also garnered national attention for being named to an
even more comprehensively compiled list as a Silver Medal School in the US News
and World Report list. We are very proud of that particular designation, as it takes
into account many more factors of student achievement than just participation in advanced studies. As is also customary for Central Kitsap, there were significant successes in the areas of Career and Technical Education, the Arts. Music, and Athletics. We attribute this to the great support of families, our amazing PTSA, the hard
work of students, and to the staff who remain Dedicated to Excellence.
Consistent with our traditions in excellence, CKHS was able to honor three National
Merit Semi-Finalists and eight National Merit Commended students this year. I want
to congratulate those students (who appear in this newsletter), their families, and
their instructors over their entire school career on a job well done. Speaking of instructors, there are a few new staff members to CKHS this year, both Certificated
and Classified. We welcome them to CKHS.
As a reminder, I am encouraging you to sign up for Parent Access to be able to
check grades and attendance for your students. Parent Access is a wonderful tool to
help your sons and daughters stay on top of their busy schedules and keep communication lines open. Please see Mrs. Shaub in the main office to get your sign-up
sheet for Parent Access, or grab one from our website. Please also connect with our
website (link above) for news and events to keep you informed about what is happening at CKHS. Also please sign up for CKHS PTSA group (membership form included in this newsletter) to become part of the group helping make CK a better
school!
Again, it is my sincere hope your family has gotten off to a great start this year, and
we look forward to an exciting year serving you at Central Kitsap High School!

Semifinalists Named in the 2016 National Merit® Scholarship Program
CKHS is pleased to announce Three National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists in the Class of 2016. The
National Merit Semi-Finalists are determined through the administration of the PSAT/NMSQT given in their
eleventh grade year. Those designated as Semi-finalists are the top 16,000 students of over 1.4 million students who tested in their qualifying year, which represents the top 1% in the nation. Their designation as
National Merit Semi-Finalists is truly a great achievement and honor. In addition to the three Semi-finalists,
eight were announced as National Merit Commended Students who represent the top 34,000 of all students in the nation. Their achievement is also outstanding.
CKHS has had a proud tradition of producing National Merit Scholars year after year in this prestigious program. We would like to congratulate them and wish them luck as they continue their notable scholastic careers. Bravo, National Merit Students!
Peter Mattsen
Abraham Shim
Emily Soth
To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record
throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn
SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist
and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the
student’s essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school
and community activities.
Over 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level and it is
from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen. Merit Scholar designees
are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous
college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE 2016 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Aidan Anderson, Alice Cassel, Calvin Fischer, Riley Fischer, Curtis Holden, Jacob Nelson,
Allan Osgood and Claire Turner have been named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation
(NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional
academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarships,
Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the
2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/
NMSQT).
“Recognition of academically talented students and the key role played by schools in their development
is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.
“The young people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their

Impact Aid Survey - Monday, November 2nd
Every year the District must apply for Federal Impact Aid funds from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds compensate CKSD for the loss of local tax dollars from tax-exempt federal
property in the Silverdale and Bremerton area. The District must conduct a Federal Residence and
Employment Survey on a yearly basis in order to obtain a current count of families in the District
who live and/or work on federal property. On November 2, 2016, students will be bringing home
the survey form used for this count. It is important that all appropriate sections on the form be
filled out completely and accurately and the form is signed and dated for each student.
These funds benefit all of our students and are used for basic education programs District-wide
(except for the special education portion, which is used directly for that program). Federal Impact
Aid is different than Heavy Impact funds. The Federal Impact Aid survey forms are required for
full funding of Impact Aid. Your cooperation in assisting the District in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Grade Reports & Parent Access
ASVAB Test – Tuesday, November 3rd
CK School District will have only two official grading

district is receiving a high number of bounced
e-mails.
(Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test)
8:00 - 11:00 am – CKHS Theater
The ASVAB is a national multi-aptitude test battery that has been provided to high schools and postsecondary schools since 1968. It includes eight individual
tests covering general science, arithmetic reasoning,
word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, math
knowledge, electronics information, auto & shop information and mechanical comprehension. It also provides
three Career Exploration Scores for Verbal Skills, Math
Skills, and Science and Technical Skills. These three
scores serve as one of several pieces of information that
can aid students in the exploration of a wide variety of
educational and career options. This test is offered at no
cost to high school students and there is no military obligation.
Earn Work Based Learning Credit
Does your student have an after school or
weekend job? He or she can earn high
school Work Experience Credit for working. The student must work 180 hours to be

CENTRAL KITSAP HIGH SCHOOL
Electronic and Communication Devices Policy
Central Kitsap High School
Use of Cell Phones or Other Electronic Devices
Research shows that student usage of E-Devices promotes critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and other essential life
skills in a highly competitive and global society. To that end, electronic devices have become part of the educational process. Electronic devices enhance the learning experience providing access and tools for all students. Most students and parents support their
appropriate use in a school setting. As an innovative school, Central Kitsap High School encourages the appropriate use of electronic
devices in the classroom or other school settings. The personal use of the electronic devices must not endanger persons or property,
disrupt the educational process, or violate the publicized policy of Central Kitsap High School and the Central Kitsap School District.
The behavior of the student using the device is addressed rather than the possession of the device.
Classroom Use
Appropriate use of electronic devices and systems enrich the teaching and learning process by permitting access to the external references and learning tools including on-line textbooks, interpretations and simulations, personal response systems, and other resources
thereby connecting the classroom to the world. Use of electronic devices in inextricably linked to greater success in the acquisition of
skills and competencies and prepares students for post-secondary education, the workplace and life.
Classroom use of electronic devices is subject to regulation by the teacher and must only be used for instructional purposes aligned
with curricular objectives and CKSD policies.
If electronic devices are utilized by the instructor as part of a planned instructional design, cooperative grouping will ensures ALL
STUDENTS have access to the electronic device.
Electronic Policy
The possession and use of electronic devices (E-Devices) is a privileged part of the educational experience. The school may
revoke the privilege of possessing or using E-Devices at any time at its sole discretion. E-Devices include devices used to communicate, receive, send, store, record or listen to voice, text, digital, audio, video, photo, electronic or internet/cyberspace data, images and/or information which shall include but not be limited to cellular phones/smartphones, iPods, personal digital assistants
(PDA’s), MP3 Players, portable music players, tablets, laptops, CD players, game players, cameras, video cameras, GPS, etc. Central Kitsap School District and Central Kitsap High School are not responsible for lost, damaged, stolen E-Device, programs
or contents.
1. E-Device users must follow all guidelines outlined in the following:
CKHS Network Account, Internet, and Gaggle e-Mail Use Agreement
CKSD Bring Your Own Device Guidelines
2. E-Devices MAY BE USED …

in the classroom for academic purposes at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers are encouraged to develop lessons utilizing
technology.

•Take or show any picture or video that the instructor has not asked for or asked to be taken or shown.
•Upload any picture or video taken in class to any social media or website.

in the hallway when classes are in session, in a classroom (without instructor permission), bathrooms, locker
rooms, school offices (counseling, main, ASB, security, attendance, etc.), school health room, theatre, library, or
during any formal school presentation, or any school assembly. When entering any of these areas, students are
expected to place all E-Devices in the “OFF” or “SILENCE” mode and store them out of sight from the teacher
and other students. If an E-Device rings, vibrates, is used for any reason or is visible anytime in these locations,
a staff member reserves the right to confiscate the device. Refusal to surrender you E-Device when asked is
defiance. Defiance can result in disciplinary consequences.
4. Other Important Guidelines:
F E-Device use must not be disruptive to other students, staff, or to the overall school environment.
F Texting to other students while they are engaged in instructional time is prohibited.
F E-Devices must not be used in the CKHS Library without approval from library staff.
F Ear plugs or earphones must be used so that others will not be able to hear the sounds from one student’s E-Device. SPEAKERS
OF ANY TYPE MAY NOT BE USED.
F In the event of a student needing to leave school due to illness (or for any other reason), students must officially check out
through either the attendance office, health office, or main office with parent/guardian permission. Contacting your parent/
guardian with your personal E-Devices and leaving without school authorization is considered a truancy.
F It is never acceptable to take photos or videos of other student or staff members without their permission.
F Students must never use E-Devices to bully or harass other students, faculty or staff in any way including, but not limited to, social
media, text messages or phone calls. Violations of this policy will result in the immediate loss of E-Device privileges for a year. The
student’s E-Device will be confiscated and not returned to the student until a parent conference is held with the student and an administrator.

Flu
Influenza (also called flu ) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.
The CDC (Center
for Disease Control) is recommending that everyone > 6 months old be vaccinated against influenza. Getting the vaccine now will protect you throughout the entire flu season which lasts into the spring months.
The 2014-2015 influenza vaccine protects you from seasonal flu. This vaccine is safe, one cannot get influenza
from it, and it is available now at many drugstores and at your physician’s office. (If you are allergic to eggs or are
presently ill, consult your physician before getting the vaccine.)
According to the CDC, receiving the vaccine is the best way to avoid getting the flu. It takes up to two weeks for your
body to build immunities after receiving the vaccine.
Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be administering flu shots on Saturday, October 25th her at CKHS from
1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
In addition, taking the following preventive actions will also help stop the spread of the disease.
• Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue
properly.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizers
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread easily this way.
• Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home until your fever has been gone for 24 hours, and avoid contact with
others.
