RESPONSE by UCL to: CL12/07: QAA CONSULTATION ON NINE REVISED AND NEW SUBJECT BENCHMARK STATEMENTS: area studies; art and design; construction, planning and surveying (previously published as building and surveying); history of art, architecture and design; health studies; music; physics; social work and Welsh. UCL welcomes the opportunity to comment on the above. All drafts of Subject Benchmark Statements relevant to subject areas/disciplines taught at UCL were circulated to the appropriate Departments for discussion and comment. Substantive comments on one individual Statement have been received from The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management as follows: Construction, Planning and Surveying (previously published as Building and Surveying): 1) UCL’s Project Management for Construction degree programme has to satisfy the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Building. We note that the Chartered Institute of Building was actively involved in the development of the Subject Benchmark Statement and we therefore endorse this document. However we do feel strongly that 'Project Management' should be identified as a separate specialism in the listing in Section 3.4. 2) In Section 7.1, the Statement names two levels of achievement - threshold and modal - and then refers to those students who exceed the modal level. It would be useful to have an explanation of what is meant by the modal level, and how this relates to threshold and typical levels.
