Dear Editorial Board: We would like to request that our research paper, “Symbolic Powers of Edge Ideals,” be considered for publication in the Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal. Our paper encompasses abstract algebra and studies some relationships between ring theory and graph theory. Undergraduates that have completed one course in abstract algebra should have no problem reading our paper. It requires familiarity with definitions of ideals and polynomial rings. The research required for this paper was done as an undergraduate research project supported by a President’s Faculty-Student Summer Research Grant from The University of Texas at Tyler during the summer of 2003 when we were both undergraduates. Scarlet Ellis and Lesley Wilson: This project was completed under the guidance of Dr. Jennifer McLoud-Mann during the summer of 2003 and was supported by a grant from The University of Texas at Tyler. Scarlet graduated from The University of Texas at Tyler in August 2004 after four years and received her BS in Mathematics and BBA in Finance. Before graduation, Milliman, an actuarial consulting firm, hired her as an actuarial analyst. Lesley graduated in May 2004 after attending The University of Texas at Tyler with her BS in Mathematics and Computer Science. East Texas Charter High School, hired her as a high school mathematics and physical science teacher. Dr. Jennifer McLoud-Mann, assistant professor of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Tyler, will be our reference for our paper. Thank you for your consideration. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Scarlet Scarlet Worthen Ellis 12660 Hillcrest #9206 Dallas, Texas 75230
