Messenger, Fall 1995
in this Messenger you'll see a story
on the recent recipients
of the Carl Totten Memorial
Award. I am extremely grateful to Mrs. Winifred
Wilberding Totten for making
these awards possible because
we could not operate the OSU
Libraries without assistance
from a large number of student workers.
Each year we employ more
than 150 student workers in
the library. Their combined
hours equal the work of approximately 34 full time
workers. Our total work force
is just under 100 people. Thus,
a little more than a quarter of
the work accomplished in the
library each year is done by
student workers.
Students often have the
worst jobs in the library. They
do most of the work of circulating 300,000 volumes a year
they reshelve more than a
million books and journals in
any given year, and they work
the late night hours when the
rest of us are at home asleep.
Students are among our
most creative and adaptable
workers. Each new student
worker brings a fresh vision to
their work. They ask us why
we do what we do, and why
we don't do it another way.
They actually use the library
in their studies and research so
they give us the invaluable
perspective of library users. In
addition, they bring with them
the breadth of their academic
experiences. Student workers
come from every college on
campus, and the knowledge
they bring with them helps us
to build better collections,
provide better information
services, and accomplish our
work more efficiently. And
many times, they also interpret the library to their fellow
Esewhere
students. It's surprising how
often a student library user
will hesitate to ask questions
of our full-time staff, but
they'll question a student
worker at one of our desks or
in the stacks. Our student
workers also tend to be impressively computer literate.
They often teach full-time staff
how to make better use of
online systems, word processing and spread sheets.
Our student workers are
also incredibly dedicated.
They work odd hours, they
work overtime, and they don't
seem to mind being re-assigned on a moment's notice
to a task which just has to be
done. They'll come in for an
emergency, and they'll work
through the night at the end of
each quarter so that books and
journals can be shelved
quickly.
Student library workers are
usually unsung heroes. When
annual reports are written, or
library accomplishments are
publicized, the library administration and staff usually get
the credit. But, you can be sure
that student workers had a
great deal to do with any
library accomplishment.
The Totten Award provides
a means by which we can
recognize the varied contributions of our student workers.
Although we could honor only
six outstanding students
through the Carl Totten Memorial Award, they represent
a vast number of students who
do outstanding work on behalf
of Oregon State University.
A good many of our student workers are also under
tremendous financial pressure.
Tuition has increased by 60%
in the last six years. It will
increase another 8.7% at OSU
next year alone. Therefore, the
financial award which accom-

STUDENT WORKERS.
panies the Totten award is a
marvelous morale booster.
Mrs. Totten created the
award because she remembers the financial struggle
she and Carl experienced as
students and young graduates entering the professional
world. She wanted to do
something to help today's
students who find themselves in the same struggle.
And today's students do
struggle to get through
college. One of the award
recipients has a baby on the
way. Another is graduating
and needs suits before he can
show up for his new job as a
Thrtland accountant. He tells
'of how hard it is to earn
enough in the summer to pay
for school during the remainder of the year.
The financial award is
good for the library too. One
Totten awardee puts it very
clearly, "Your award is
certainly an encouragment
for me to continue to do my
best at the library. .
Thank you, student workers. You're very precious to
us. And thank you, Mrs.
Totten, for enabling us to
honor our student workers
and for making their financial burden just a bit easier to
bear.

L. Fryer has recently
been appointed to the
Board of Directors of the
Friends of OSU Libraries.
Fryer, professor and chairman
of the Microbiology Department at OSU, was born in Fort
Worth, Texas. He received his
B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in microbiology from Oregon State
University, and has been with
the Microbiology Dept. at OSU
since 1964. Prior to that, Fryer
was an assistant professor in
John
the Department of Food Science and Technology, and also
served with the Oregon Fish
Commission Research Division. Fryer's scientific interest
is in the infectious diseases of
Pacific salmon, and the pathogenic microbiology and immunology of cold blooded animals.
Arik A. Hill has also ac-
cepted a position on the
Friends Board of Directors.
Hill graduated from OSU in
1993 where he earned a B.S. in
health care administration. He
currently works for the Hill
Physicians Medical Group in
San Ramon, California. While
Hill was a student at OSU, he
helped negotiate the first
student body contribution to
the OSU Library Expansion
Project, through his leadership
in Blue Key. Hill will serve as
the new regional member to
the Board.
A third recent appointee to
the Board is Betty Miner.
Betty, long time resident of
Corvallis, is the coordinator of
the Extension Mini-College
held each June on the OSU
campus, a conference on home
economics and related areas.
Betty's expertise is in family
and consumer science. She
holds a B.S. in home economics
education, and an M.S. in foods
and nutrition, and also currently holds office in the Or-
egon Home Economics Association. Betty was born in New
York and grew up in Little
Rock, Arkansas. She remarks
that libraries have always held
importance in her life - she
remembers that when she was
very young, her family would
save gas coupons so they could
make weekly trips downtown
to the library.
Jo Anne Trow has also
accepted a position with the
Friends Board of Directors. Jo
Anne is the recently retired
Vice Provost for Student Affairs at OSU, a position she
held since 1983. A professor of
education, she holds a B.A.
degree from Denison University, an M.A. from Indiana
University, and a Ph.D. from
Michigan State University, and
has been with OSU since 1965.
She has been involved in
leadership positions in a number of national student affairs
organizations; such as President of the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors, the
American College Personnel
Association, and the National
Association of Student Personnel Administrators. Jo Anne
also recently completed two
terms on the Commission on
Colleges of the Northwest
Association of Schools and
Colleges and is a public member of the Oregon Community
Corrections Advisory Board.
We welcome all four new
members to the Board and look
forward to working with them
on exciting upcoming projects.

magine you're on the
faculty at OSU, doing
research on a special
project, when you discover a collection of rare
books you really need to look
at. After a little research, you
discover that only three libraries in the U.S. have the books in
their collections, and the only
way to access them is to go to
one of those libraries. The
closest one is in Ohio. Your

available. What do you do?
One option is to spend your

Fortunately, OSU offers another option. The Library

"The Library Research

been a focal point and oftphotographed symbol of Kerr
Library since it was set in
place. Created by Wayne
Taysom, the fountain is composed of abstract holly leaves,
each holly-shaped basin of
yellow bronze filling with
water and spilling over into the
next one.
For most of the school year,
it is a beautiful haven of musical, flowing water in a peaceful
setting for rest and contemplation, enjoyed by many at the
university and around the
town. But each spring, the
fountain is filled with bubbles
as a last practical joke of graduating students! And one year,
Professor Taysom recalls, the
students had it piled high with
pumpkins! However it is
enjoyed, we can assure you
that it will still be there for
many more years to come. A
new courtyard is envisioned to
surround the fountain, once the
new library structure is completed.
Professor Taysom also
designed decorative door
panels and door pulls in
bronze for the entrance doors
of Kerr Library, which carry
deeper philosophical ideas.
Different alphabets suggest the
communication of knowledge
among peoples. A second
theme, of fir trees and plants,
depicts the importance of
natural resources to Oregon.
The panels, door pulls, and
fountain were all cast in the
University foundry, a joint
effort of the College of Engineering, the library, and the
physical plant.

ANNUAL GIFTS
WITH A LrrTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
J. Fisher, a member of the OSU Library Campaign Volunteer Leadership Committee, and an
honorary trustee of the OSU Foundation, has made
a significant gift to support the OSU Library Campaign.
Ruth, president of Jim Fisher Motors in
Portland, made the gift in memory of
her late husband, Jim. Both Jim and
Ruth are OSU alums, graduating in
1954 with degrees in business administration.
Ruth enjoys an active career in the
Portland area. In 1993, Fisher was
named winner of the 4th annual Sports
Ruth J. Fisher
Illustrated All-Star Dealer Award,
Class of '54
chosen for exceptional business performance and commitment to the industry, country and community. Ruth has also served as President of both the
Oregon Symphony Women's Association, and the Assistance League of Portland. Prior to becoming involved with
Jim Fisher Motors, she sold real estate in the Portland area.
Jim was active in Portland civic affairs, as well.
Ruth and Jim have always been avid supporters of
OSU, and the Fisher family's investment in the OSU Libraries is gratefully acknowledged.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS - FATHER AND SON
TEAM REMEMBER ALMA MATER THROUGH LIBRARY CAMPAIGN
families boast of generational ties to Oregon
State University with mothers, fathers, sons,
daughters, brothers, sisters, nephews, etc. each
positively affecting their lives and
careers with OSU educations. One such
partnership (in this case father and son)
has acknowledged that fact with a
major pledge to The OSU Library
Campaign.
James R. Kuse, a 1955 graduate of
the College of Engineering and his son,
Michael Kuse, who received a business
James Kuse
degree in 1988, have combined forces to
C/ass of '55
help rebuild and expand OSU's library.
Kuse, the father, was a member of Phi
Gamma Delta Fraternity while son,
Mick, is a member of Sigma Alpha
Epsilon. The pledge is also on behalf of
the Kuse family which includes two
daughters (one an Oregon Duck!) and
wife and mother, Shirley Kuse. Jim
Kuse is the retired founding chairman
of Georgia Gulf Corporation in Atlanta,
Georgia, and Mick handles investments Mick Kuse
for a family firm. He and his family are C/ass of '88
also based in Atlanta.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
Cecil MacGregor and his wife, Martha D.
MacGregor of Corvallis, have made a generous gift
in support of the OSU Library Campaign.
Col. MacGregor was born in Colorado in 1908. Both he and Martha
graduated from OSU in 1932, he with a
degree in mechanical engineering, and
Martha in home economics. Col.
MacGregor enjoyed a career with the
U.S. Army for more than 30 years,
receiving numerous citations and
medals for outstanding service, and
Cecil MacGregor
retiring as a full Colonel. Following his
Class of 32
military career, he joined OSU as a staff
engineer, and was involved in the
building of the present Kerr Library. He became chief of
the Physical Plant of the university before his retirement
Colonel
in 1970.
Martha MacGregor was born in Montana, and met Cecil
while at OSU. Martha has had a very busy life as a homemaker and volunteer worker in the
field of home economics, in the ensuing
years following their marriage. During
the military years, she encouraged
activities of the several post women's
clubs, and as one of eight women,
planned the conference of American
Women's Clubs overseas, which convened annually with delegates from
Martha D. MacGregor
clubs in all the NATO nations.
Class of '32
Col. and Mrs. MacGregor enjoy an
active retirement with extensive travel throughout North
America.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
H. and Maxine Peterson Ott of Westfield,
New Jersey, are long time supporters of the OSU
Libraries. Over the years, the Otts have supported their alma mater in numerous ways through scholarships and memorial funds. As an example, in a special
celebration of their wedding anniversary last year, reception guests donated
gifts to the OSU Libraries in the Ott's
honor.
Both Walther and Maxine are OSU
graduates, and their roots run deep.
Maxine received her degree in business
education in 1934, and Walther received both his B.S. and M.S. from
Wa/flier Ott
OSU, majoring in poultry husbandry
Class of 34
and animal nutrition. Maxine grew up
in Corvallis, and her father, Sigurd H. Peterson, was head of
the English Department for many years, during the time
that William Jasper Kerr was OSU's president. She also
remembers that Linus Pauling was one of her father's
earliest students!
Walther Ott was born on a farm near Hermiston, Oregon. His parents pioneered their way from Missouri to
Oregon in 1908. After receiving his master's from OSU, Ott
went on to receive his Ph.D. from Penn State in 1942.
Thereafter, he joined Merck Institute for Therapeautic
Research Laboratories, enjoying a 34 year career with
Merck, retiring as Senior Scientist. Ott's professional interests have always been in poultry science and animal nutrition. This strong interest led him to establish the Walther
Ott Professorship in Poultry Science at OSU, which was
recently celebrated on campus.

WITH A LrrrLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS
B. Smith and D. LaVonne Smith of
Bellevue, Washington, have established a charitable remainder unitrust with the OSU Foundation
to benefit The Library Campaign.
Andy, an Oregon native, spent his early years in
Maupin, and worked as a disc jockey in The Dalles and
Vancouver prior to college. After a stint
in the Navy, he enrolled at OSU, graduating in 1950 with a B.S. in electrical
,.'
engineering. He then went to work for
*
Pacific NW Bell as a directory assis'
tance operator on the switchboards.
Over the years, he worked his way up
the ladder. By 1961, Andy was the
director of the Oregon Department of
Andrew Smith
Economic Development under CoverClass of 50
nor Tom McCall, and in 1978, he was
named President of Pacific NW Bell. Smith retired in 1989
as president of operations for US West Communications in
Seattle, having enjoyed a career of over 38 years with U.S.
West and predecessor companies.
Andy and LaVonne have two children and five grandchildren, and spend part of each year in Palm Desert, California. The Smiths indicate that they recognize a quality
library is the foundation for future excellence at Oregon
State, and they are pleased to be in a position to help make
the project a success.
