Holmes Holmes Hope Hopkins Hore Howell Jones Page 3 of 9 HOBBS - Major-General Percy Eyre Francis Hobbs, C.B., C.M.G., late 1939 Oct 28 R.A.S.C., died at Barnaboy, Farnborough, on Thursday, at the age of 74. Born on Fenruary 18, 1865, he was the younger son of Colonel T.F. Hobbs, of Barnaboy, Frankford, King's County, and of the 6th Royal Regiment. Educated at Fettes, he joined the R.M.L.I. as a lieutenant in 1883, and after some six years' service transferred to the Army Service Corps, in which a year later he was promoted captain. At the outbreak of the South African War he was serving as E.A.A.G. at Woolwich, and in October, 1899, he went out to take up a similar appointment in south Africa. He took part in early operations in Cape Colony and in the Orange Free State, and subsequently, as Assistant Adjutant General, in the Transvaal, being mentioned in dispatches and made C.M.G. Alfred Second Lieutenant Alfred Irving, killed in action in Mesopotamia on October 26, was the youngest son of Dr. and Mrs Irving, of British Guiana and Edinburgh. He was born in Demerara in 1899, and was educated at Epsom College, where he was captain of the cricket XI in 1916. He entered the Indian Army in 1917, and was subsequently gazetted to the 15th Sikhs. At the time of his death he was attached to the 14th Sikhs. An elder brother, Second Lieutenant David Irving, Royal Scots Fusiliers, fell at Guillamant on July 30, 1916. Mr. Jones was a well-known sugar estates proprietor of British Guiana. He came of an old Demerara family which owned Plantations Houston, La Bonne Mère, and Hope. After receiving his education in England, he went out to the colony and gained a practical knowledge of sugar cultivation and manufacture on Pln Farm, afterwards becoming attorney of the family estates. He was elected a member of the Court of Policy of British Guiana in 1880 and was senior member when the old Constitution expired in 1891. He was appointed to the Executive Council in 1900 and reappointed in 1905. Always zealous where the interests of the colony and its people were concerned, he served on many public commissions and boards, and was Commissioner at the first colonial Exhibition in 1886. Unlike many of the old school of planter, he was an ardent believer in minor industries. Mr. Howell Jones represented British Guiana at the last coronation and received the C.M.G. on that occasion. He was a youth of amiable disposition and excellent principles, esteemed and respected by all who knew him; and his loss will be long and seriously deplored by his afflicted mother and friends. KENRICK - A very painful sensation was created, both in general and official 1892 circles in British Guiana, on September 17, by the tidings which were brought to Georgetown from the north-west district to the effect that Mr. W. W. KENRICK, Commissioner of Mines for the colony, had died from bilious remittent fever at the Government agent's house at Morawhanna, where he went at the end of August for the purpose of making an official inspection and reporting upon the goldfields of the north-western portion of the colony. Mr. Kenrick was appointed by Lord Knutsford to be Gold Commissioner of the colony - his office subsequently came to be known by the title of the Commissionership of Mines - and came to British Guiana in January, 1891. He was closely concerned with the framing of the new mining regulations now in force in the colony, having had large experience of the industry in South Africa and California. He made several expeditions into the interior with the object of reporting upon the wealth of the colony, and on the occasion of his last journey he and his party had got as far as the Amacurvo riv KERR - On June 27, 1933, at a nursing home, London, Edith Louise, widow 1933 of Capr.
