ITU-T International Network Designator addresses (IND) - Start-up Phase
Subject:
Dear Sir/Madam,
1
ITU-T Study Group 2 (Operational aspects of service provision, networks and
performance) approved, at its meeting in January 2001, Recommendation E.191.1 entitled:
"Criteria and Procedures for the allocation of ITU-T International Network Designator Addresses".
In this Recommendation, the ITU International Network Designator (ITU IND) ATM End System
Address (AESA) was established for use by service providers for the provision of ATM services.
The ITU IND AESA enables companies, corporations and governmental institutions to implement
an ATM addressing scheme for public ATM services that may or may not be offered across
international borders.
(NOTE - Apart from the ITU IND AESA, there are several other AESA types, that each has their
own characteristic properties. Please refer to Recommendation E.191 for an overview of all existing
AESA types.)

The IND field, which is three octets in length, identifies the entity to which the Domain Specific
Part or DSP is assigned.
3
ITU-TSB has been designated to perform the task of Registrar for the IND field of the ITU
IND AESA. At its last meeting in June 2001, ITU Council 2001 approved TSB's work plan for this
service. This registration responsibility includes processing registration requests from ATM service
providers and assignment of the IND values in accordance with Recommendation E.191.1.
4
The conditions and principles concerning ITU IND AESA assignment are specified in
Recommendation E.191.1. All applicants for this resource will be validated against this
Recommendation.
The application form is annexed and additional information is also available on the Internet
http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/universalnumbers/atm/.
5
At the Study Group 2 meeting in January 2001 in Geneva, Switzerland, the following
timetable for the start-up phase for the receipt and validation of the ITU-IND AESA applications
was determined:
•
30 July 2001: Notification of availability
30 days prior to the commencement of acceptance of applications, the Registrar will announce ITU
IND availability.
•
30 August 2001: Receipt of applications
Applications will be treated on a first come first served basis and the INDs will be assigned in a
sequential fashion, i.e. the applicant may not request a certain code.
6
A registration fee of CHF 100 was approved by Council 2001 for the registration of each
IND value.
