New from
The MIT Press
Joseph Y. Halpern
“Halpern presents a masterful, complete and unified
account of the many ways in which the connections
between logic, probability theory and
commonsensical linguistic terms can be formalized.
Terms such as ‘true,’ ‘certain,’ ‘plausible,’ ‘possible,’ ‘believed,’ ‘known,’ ‘default,’ ‘relevant,’
‘independent,’ and ‘preferred’ are given rigorous
semantical and syntactical analyses, and their
interrelationships explicated and exemplified. An
authoritative panoramic reference for philosophers,
cognitive scientists and artificial intelligence
researchers.” — Judea Pearl, Computer Science
Department, University of California, Los Angeles
456 pp., 12 illus. $50
What Is Thought?
Eric B. Baum
“Presents a novel thesis—that the mind is a
program whose components are semantically
meaningful modules—and explores it with a rich
array of evidence drawn from a variety of fields.
Baum’s argument depends on much of the
intellectual core of computer science, and as a
result the book can also ser ve as a short
course in computer science for non-specialists.”
— David Waltz, Columbia University
A Bradford Book • 495 pp., 34 illus. $37

Reasoning About Knowledge
Ronald Fagin, Joseph Y. Halpern,
Yoram Moses, and Moshe Y. Vardi
“It is easy to foresee that this book will become
a classic.” — Fabrizio Sebastiani,
The Computer Journal

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at
the National Library of Medicine, a research component of the
National Institutes of health (NIH) and the Department of Health
and Human Services, is recruiting for postdoctoral fellows,
graduate and medical students and visiting scholars to participate
in collaborative research in a variety of areas of biomedical
informatics.
Lister Hill Center research activities fall into several broad
categories. Our language and knowledge processing research
involves basic research in medical language processing and medical
knowledge representation, and image processing research involves
the development of algorithms and methods to effectively process
biomedical images of all types. We have developed and continue to
support a number of information systems, all of which are
informed by our basic research activities. In addition, Lister Hill
Center staff are involved in a number of activities that define and
support the research infrastructure for next generation information
systems.
Postdoctoral candidates should have a PhD., M.D. or equivalent
degree in medical informatics, computer science or engineering and
have research experience in informatics. Stipends are
commensurate with research experience and education. For
additional information and instructions on submitting your
application, see our website, at: http://lhncbc.nlm.nih.gov .
