The CBA Faculty Senate met in CBB 323 at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008. Chair, Rex Karsten
opened the meeting by introducing Bev Kopper, who asked to address the Senate regarding UNI’s
preparation for institutional reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. That process is now underway in preparation
for the reaccreditation site visit in spring, 2011.
UNI has chosen to participate in a joint project between the HLC and the Policy Center on the
First Year of College. UNI is working with the policy center to participate in a national process
known as Foundations of Excellence in the First College Year (FoE). The FoE project will help
us examine the academic and personal experiences of our first year students and make
improvements to ensure that we are providing a solid foundation for the rest of their college
years.
Over 200 volunteers across campus are serving on the nine FoE dimension committees. Those
dimensions committees include:

To begin the self study it is important that we conduct an audit of the present practices regarding
UNI first year students. Recently, a survey was sent to faculty and staff seeking opinions about
the first year experience at UNI. Next month a survey will be sent to UNI students. In addition,
the task force responsible for this self-study is seeking to locate all of UNI’s present policies,
procedures, and regulations etc. for first year students.
In addition to the FoE project, Kopper explained the HLC criteria that define the necessary
attributes of an accredited institution. The criteria include:





Mission and Integrity
Preparing for the Future
Student Learning and Effective Teaching
Acquisition, Discovery and Application of Knowledge
Engagement and Service
