German Level 3+

(Common European Framework Level B1)

Prerequisite for entry

Successful completion of German Level 3 at UCL CLIE or for learners who have a good basic knowledge of the language or those who have studied the language at A-Level some years ago. Participants should be able to give instructions and describe events, talk about the past and have a basic knowledge of the subjunctive.

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes

Progression

After 20 hours students may progress to level 4

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable students with a good basic knowledge of German to converse reasonably fluently with native speakers and discuss personal, social and current issues using appropriate structures. Cultural awareness will be further developed through an extended use of authentic material.

Talking about the climate and weather; describing problems concerning the environment; making prognoses; giving reasons; expressing contradictions; naming conditions and consequences

Commenting a situation; talking about rules of conduct and gestures; recognising and understanding conflicts and finding solutions

Talking about different phases in life; reading and understanding a literary text; discussing conflicts; expressing suppositions

Talking about migration, about problems, fears and hopes

Talking about Europe and politics, describing European institutions, expressing alternatives and contradictions

Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics

Pronunciation exercises

Grammar

wegen + Genitive; future with werden + Infinitive; conjunctions: je…, desto…./ nicht…, sondern…

Present participle; obwohl clauses, conjunctions: nicht nur, sondern auch/ weder noch

Suppositions: könnte ; past perfect; seit clauses; possessives (genitive)

The verb lassen ;

man as substitute for passive sentences; relative pronouns (genitive)

interrogative words with prepositions: wofür, woran, worüber, wovon, womit ; the verb brauchen + zu + Infinitive; contradictions: trotzdem ; conjunction: entweder…oder ; nouns with -keit or -heit

Revision: advices with wenn and sollte ; imperfect tense; passive; verbs with prepositions
