Herman and Robert L Smith College of EHHS Strives to Internationalize the Curriculum The College of Education, Health, and Human Services, with its four schools, is in the process of laying the groundwork for a college-wide internationalization initiative. With funding through a grant through the Provost’s Office, the initiative is to provide support for faculty to direct a shift in student learning. This initiative within the college aligns with the Provost’s commitment to internationalize the Kent State University curriculum by 2020, as well as with the strategic goals of the college. According to Mary Ann Devine, CoChair of the Study Group, ―The goal is to make internationalization a thread of addressing global issues in every course throughout the college.‖ The Study Group identified and prioritized five learning outcomes from faculty surveys. The learning outcomes are categorized into three categories: Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes. Knowledge Understands his/her culture in global and comparative context-that is, recognizes that his/her culture is one of many diverse cultures and that alternative perceptions and behaviors may be based in cultural differences. Skills Adapts his/her behavior to interact effectively with those who are different. Uses knowledge, diverse cultural frames of reference, and alternative perspectives to think critically and solve problems. Interprets issues and situations from more than one cultural perspective. Attitudes Is willing to learn from others who are culturally and globally different from him/her. A variety of assessments will be used to determine the effectiveness of course content. Assessment strategies may include student portfolios, pre– and post-tests, interviews, sharing knowledge by interviewing someone from a different culture, journaling, and role playing. A pilot course within each college is in the process of being developed for Fall 2011. According to Avril McClelland, Co-Chair, the pilot course professors are Mary Ann Devine, Recreation, Park and Tourism Management, Jennifer Fisette, Physical Education/Teacher Education, Angie Ha, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Maureen Blankemeyer, Human Development and Family Studies. 1 Linda Robertson, Emily Penix, Alex Vaught, Sarah Wood, Dean Daniel Mahony, Mansoureh Sharifzadeh, and Ray Heisey after the Cultural Dialogue: Challenges Teaching Iranian Girls and a Study Abroad Panel. The Associate Director of International Affairs, Ted McKown, writes, ―We have a number of students in the SISU 3+2 program. 3+2 essentially is when a student does the first three years of the bachelor’s program at SISU then two years at Kent State. The first year at Kent State is shared between the bachelor’s and master’s program. At the end of five years the student is awarded a Bachelor’s degree from SISU and a Master’s degree from Kent State University.‖ According to KSU’s website, Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel Master's Degree and Educational Foundations are the two target master's program for these degrees. According to David Di Maria, Director of International Student Recruitment, Admissions and Advising, currently KSU enrolls 17 SISU 3+2 students and the majority are in Education and Business degree programs. As part of this new partnership, five faculty members from SISU have begun their Ph.D. programs at KSU--with two selecting EHHS's programs in cultural foundations. In 2009-2011 academic years, two SISU members, Liangtao Ni and Haiyan Zhao, are in residence at KSU. ―This is a good opportunity to strengthen our intercultural competence by living in the United States, and it is also an important decision on SISU’s part by strengthening the faculty’s overseas experience,‖ says Haiyan Zhao. In the HIED master’s program, two students are enrolled, Riuling Liu and Tianjun Shen. Tianjun writes, ―I am impressed by the easy and fast application procedure of the program and there are a variety of Kent master's programs for me to choose from.‖ He also mentions that the partnership made the application process and credit transfer much easier. Email Excerpts from our Student Teachers Abroad Hi, Dr. Cushner and all KSU COST students! I am at Springfield Primary school in Kallaroo, Western Aust ra l ia (Per th) teaching all subjects in a mixed age years 4/5 classroom. The school has a great community feel to it and has parents that are extremely involved with the school, take great interest in it, and truly care about their children and the other students that go there. My class is absolutely amazing and I have already enjoyed doing some lessons with them. I am currently planning heaps of lessons to take over with next term. We have a school holiday coming up in one week’s time so I am planning to do some traveling around Australia for two weeks. I will explore Sydney, then Cairns, finishing in Uluru at Ayer's Rock; I am so excited! Caitrin Scott ———————————————————————— Hi, Dr. Cushner, I am in an all-boys school in Killarney, Ireland, and I am teaching the 1st and 2nd year students in science and history. The teachers have been friendly and helpful; however, as one of the teachers described to me yesterday my school is a third-world country in terms of resources and technology. I have actually seen worksheets that have been hand written and photocopied. As far as my accommodations, it has been great. I am staying with a host family that Batt referred me to and there is another student here who is from Middle Tennessee State who is also student teaching. Hope everyone is enjoying their placements and temporary homes! John Christman ——————————————————————————— Hello, Everyone! I'm in a tiny town called Kenmare in Ireland, and although it's small it's absolutely perfect. Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming, and I've had no problem getting to know the locals and making a few friends my age. My accommodation is with a family outside of town; it's about a 15 minute walk and they've given me a bike to use. I've had some trouble getting the internet, but overall my experience has been fantastic so far. I went up this past weekend to visit the American teachers up in Killarney, and we had a blast! Hope everyone else is enjoying the semester! Mansoureh Sharifzadeh, presently a teacher in the Tohid Pre-University Center and in the Sahbaye Safa High School in Tehran, Iran, shared her insights on the challenges in teaching English to her high school girls. One challenge identified included the English textbooks, which are out of date and lack relevant connections to Iranian perspectives and culture. 3 AIS-EHHS sponsored an American Football 101 event to coincide with the KSU Homecoming Football Game held at Dix Stadium on Saturday, October 9. For many of the international students, it was their first experience of the traditional American sport. A brief introduction to the game was provided by Dave Kokandy, a master’s student in Higher Education. Students learned about downs, field goals, punting, and touchdowns, while they experienced the crowds of college football fans. Upcoming Events in November All are welcome to attend.
