www.isaoc.org Winter 2013 January 8: Wireless systems to improve management of assets and operations in water/waste water applications Inside This Issue… 2 - President’s Message 3 - CAP Training in Orange County 4 - Call For Scholarship Applications for 2014 Wireless technologies have been used for decades in the water/waste water industry in a multitude of applications including pump station control, real-time treatment plant monitoring, early flood-warning systems, level monitoring/ alarms, and infrastructure upgrades. Advantages of wireless in these applications include enhanced safety, compliance with regulatory controls, and reduced cost of infrastructure. Additionally, today’s wireless systems have raised the level of security to a new high. This talk will provide real world examples of deployments in the industry and focus on best practices that ensure successful projects and address the ways in which these networks can be designed to be more reliable while being more secure. The classification system provides users and manufacturers a means of specifying the type and concentration of airborne contaminants to which a specific piece of electronic hardware may be exposed. The standard establishes airborne contaminant classes for fixed (non-mobile) installations during normal operation (non-emergency conditions) or during transportation and storage. Activities addressed in these environments include design, manufacturing, sales, installation, test, use, and maintenance. The classifications may also be used as a guide when establishing requirements for environmental control of buildings or other protective housings for industrial process measurement and control systems. The classifications pertain only to the environment external to the equipment that may affect the equipment externally or internally. The effects of environmental conditions on the safety, comfort, and performance of operating and maintenance personnel are not covered. For information about viewing or obtaining this standard, visit www.isa.org/findstandards, select ‘71’from the drop-down list and scroll down. Software for using ISA 5.1 symbols with AutoCAD released ANSI/ISA5.1-2009, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification, is ISA’s most widely used standard. It establishes a uniform means of depicting and identifying instruments or devices and their inherent functions, instrumentation systems and functions, and application software functions used for measurement, monitoring, and control, by presenting a designation system that includes identification schemes and graphic symbols. A new software product based on the standard has been issued for use with the Autodesk AutoCAD software platform. It provides users with graphic symbols to be used during the engineering design and layout for a variety of instrumentation-related activities, including: • Piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID) • Process flow diagrams (PFD) • Logic diagram development • Electrical schematic layouts 6 ISA Society Events ISA Symposia Schedule For links to these and other ISA events, please see www.isa.or into@isa.org or (919) 549-8411. 5-6 March 2014 2014 Food and Pharmaceutical Industries Division (FPID) Symposium ISA Headquarters, Research Triangle Park NC www.isa.org/FPID2014 Final Papers due 7 February 2014 4-8 May 2014 59th ISA Analysis Division Symposium Crowne Plaza, Baton Rouge, LA www.isa.org/AD2014 Final Papers due 24 January 2014 19-21 May 2014 14th ISA Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR)Fugitive Emissions Symposium Astor Crowne Plaza, New Orleans, LA www.isa.org/LDAR2014 Abstract submissions due 15 January 2014 • Functional block diagrams • Instrument loop diagrams The software provides annotative-style symbol blocks for resizing and layer color inheritance and text style selection, and symbol groups for symbol palette configuration for ease of symbol selection.
