Applications for 2014
Wireless technologies have been used for decades in the water/waste water
industry in a multitude of applications including pump station control, real-time
treatment plant monitoring, early flood-warning systems, level monitoring/
alarms, and infrastructure upgrades. Advantages of wireless in these applications
include enhanced safety, compliance with regulatory controls, and reduced cost
of infrastructure. Additionally, today’s wireless systems have raised the level of
security to a new high. This talk will provide real world examples of
deployments in the industry and focus on best practices that ensure successful
projects and address the ways in which these networks can be designed to be
more reliable while being more secure.
Steven Toteda, Vice President & General Manager at Eaton, brings over 25 years of experience
in the wireless and wireline communications equipment market. As VP & GM of the Wireless

The Repository for Industrial Security Incidents (RISI) database indicates the water/wastewater
and transportation sectors have experienced large increases in reported cybersecurity incidents in
recent years: 60 percent and 160 percent, respectively. These findings were published in the 2013
Annual Report on Cyber Security Incidents and Trends Affecting Industrial Control Systems.
The complete artricle on industrial control system and SCADA security can be read in the

generous gifts from supporters. More details on these various scholarships are included below.
Educational Foundation Scholarship
Recipients of awards are full-time college or university students in
either a graduate, undergraduate, or two-year degree program with at
least an overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students should be enrolled in
a program in automation and control or a closely related field.

Standards and Practices
New ISA standard
classifies airborne
contaminant effects on
electronic hardware
Submitted by Paul Bodeau, Standards and Practices Chair, Los
Angeles Section
ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013, Environmental Conditions for Process
Measurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants, establishes
a classification system for airborne contaminants and biological
influences that may affect electronic hardware, including process
measurement and control instruments, information technology,
telecommunications, networking and data center equipment, and
electronic office equipment. The classification system provides users
and manufacturers a means of specifying the type and concentration of
airborne contaminants to which a specific piece of electronic hardware
may be exposed.
The standard establishes airborne contaminant classes for fixed
(non-mobile) installations during normal operation (non-emergency
conditions) or during transportation and storage. Activities addressed in
these environments include design, manufacturing, sales, installation,
test, use, and maintenance. The classifications may also be used as a
guide when establishing requirements for environmental control of
buildings or other protective housings for industrial process measurement and control systems.
The classifications pertain only to the environment external to the
equipment that may affect the equipment externally or internally. The
effects of environmental conditions on the safety, comfort, and
performance of operating and maintenance personnel are not covered.
For information about viewing or obtaining this standard, visit
www.isa.org/findstandards, select ‘71’from the drop-down list and
scroll down.
Software for using
ISA 5.1 symbols
with AutoCAD released
ANSI/ISA5.1-2009, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification, is
ISA’s most widely used standard. It establishes a uniform means of
depicting and identifying instruments or devices and their inherent
functions, instrumentation systems and functions, and application
software functions used for measurement, monitoring, and control, by
presenting a designation system that includes identification schemes and
graphic symbols.
A new software product based on the standard has been issued for
use with the Autodesk AutoCAD software platform. It provides users
with graphic symbols to be used during the engineering design and
layout for a variety of instrumentation-related activities, including:
• Piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID)
• Process flow diagrams (PFD)
• Logic diagram development
• Electrical schematic layouts

The software provides annotative-style symbol blocks for resizing
and layer color inheritance and text style selection, and symbol groups for
symbol palette configuration for ease of symbol selection. Users can
assign instrument ISA-style tag numbering format (including prefix,
functional ID, loop number and suffix) to instrument bubbles via
preassigned attributes. Instrument bubbles include hidden attributes for
manufacturer, model number, PLC/DCS, and more.
Other features include final control element actuator symbols and
final control elements programmed for drop down selection; instrumentation device and function symbols programmed with drop down selection
of “device location and accessibility” selection from one symbol; and inprocess-line symbols (valves) programmed to blank out background when
placed in a process line.
