Luther, FCC, USA 21 September 2001 To all registred participants With the agreement of the Chairman, Jan Verduijn, and the ITU Counselor, Albert Nalbandian, and particularly to get word out without delay (because it is late on a Friday afternoon here in Washington, D.C.,), I am authorized to advise now that the Chicago meeting for the revision of the ITU Spectrum Monitoring Handbook will be held starting Monday, November 26, at 1400 h (with registration starting at 1300 h) and ending at noon on Tuesday, December 4, 2001. The meeting duration and configuration will be exactly as originally foreseen, but just transformed exactly ten weeks beyond the original dates. The meeting will take place in the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg Hotel, 50 N Martingale Road, Chicago, Schaumburg, Illinois 60173. Telephone is +1 847 240 0100. Fax is +1 847 240 2388. The rate for this new period is substantially reduced because the timing of the meeting is later in the season. Daily rate in Nov. and Dec. will be $116 + 12 % tax, which does not include breakfast. The conference room rate is valid Saturday night, November 24 until Wednesday, December 5. Reservations should be made under the keywords, "Agilent Technologies/ITU Handbook Meeting." The conference room rate and the ITU block reservation at the Marriott Hotel expire Monday, November 5. Only a limited number of rooms are being blocked for us, so early reservations are encouraged. Reservations are to be made by delegates directly with Marriott. Toll free worldwide telephone numbers are available at www.marriotthotels.com. All reservations must be accompanied by a first night room deposit, or guaranted with a major credit card. Cancellation policy is for a 24-hour notice. High speed internet access is available in guest rooms for an additional $10 per day. A LAN card and cable with the standard LAN connector is required. Delegates are cautioned that strict airport security measures are now taking much longer than before the terrorist attacks of September 11, so that adequate time needs to be allowed if there is a change of aircraft within the U.S. to make connections to Chicago. Note also that the weekend (Nov. 24 25) before the Handbook meeting begins is a heavily-traveled holiday time in the U.S., suggesting that even more time be allowed if aircraft changes are necessary. O'Hare Airport in Chicago is expected to be particularly crowded on Sunday, November 25. The weather in Chicago in November and early December can be cold and windy. There is the possibility of light snow or rain mixed with snow. Over the last several decades, temperatures in Chicago in November average from about 15 degrees above freezing, to freezing, progressing almost linearly from warmer to colder over the month. Average temperatures in December start the month at about freezing and progress to perhaps 10 degrees below freezing at the end of December. D:\612856174.doc 31.05.16 –3– It is suggested that weather forecasts for Chicago be checked before beginning travel for more accurate prediction. Ground transportation arrangements as announced in the original Circular Letter 1/LCCE/44 remain unchanged. It is requested that you reannounce your participation by indicating in a reply e-mail that you plan to attend the Handbook meeting. We will work with the ITU Bureau staff to try and have a Corrigenda to the Circular Letter 1/LCCE/44 released, giving all the above information in a more formal way. For those interested, the Space Monitoring Meeting will be held as originally scheduled. All of the expressions of sympathy and condolences for the terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and on the Pentagon, are very much appreciated. You may have seen press reports or heard from the President of the United States last night, that many, many countries of the world had citizens that were innocent victims themselves in the attacks. As many as one-thousand men, women, and children from perhaps as many as fifty countries other than the U.S., died in the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings. It is very clear to us that the world joins together against these acts and stands united against terrorism. Very best regards to all. I hope to see everyone in Chicago.
