Agriculture, like all great industries, needs aoourate end complete statistical information for the guidance of production sad Such data are used by farmers, farm organize.. tione, end by farmers' agents, representatives and spokesmen, in planning agricultural produ.tion to meet market demands; iii connection with various marketing progrsno involving standardization, warehousing, credit, advertising and distribution; as a basis for agricultural legislation; in tariff and trade agreement problems I marketing operations. in transportation matters involving facilities and rates; end in working out euoh vast projects as the agricultural adjustment, land use, and soil conservation programs. This bulletin is an important addition to the agricultural statistics for the State of Oregon. It is particularly desirable that estimates of Oregon's specialty products should be available from year to year. It will be observed that the report herewith shows the data arranged by oo,mties and type of farming districts, a procedure of mach value which should if possible be extended to our principal products as well. Annual estimates of principal crops grown generally in this country have been made on a state-wide basis for many years by the United States Department of Agriculture. However, annual county estimates have not been prepared regularly and data on many specialty products important in this state have been incomplete or entirely lacking. For instance, the Bureau of Agricultural Economics estimated the state's cash farm income at llO,245,OOO* for 1936, but this sum does not include numerous farm pro- ducts such as vetch seed, field pea seed, Italian rye grass, bent grass, and other grass seeds, Ladino clover seed, flaxseed, fiber flax, filberts, peppermint, turkeys, geese, ducks, fur-bearing animals, honey and some other crop and animal products which are referred to in this report as specialty crops. The estimates published herein are based upon information obtained through personal contact with more than 700 informed persons--growers, shippers, dealers, manufacturers, federal agricultural statisticians, county agricultural agents, experiment station staff, state department of agriculture officials and others in the 36 counties of the state-as well as considerable correspondence and study of historical data. Indebtedness and appreciation to all who have cooperated and contributed in any way to make this publication as accurate and complete as possible is gratefully acAmowledged. Explanation of Terms Estimates are expressions of judgment regarding what is true at any given time based upon partial data, past relationships, calculation, appraisement and general knowledge of the subject under consideration and are published subjeCt to revision. Harvested acreage is estimated acreage from which all or any part of the crop is harvested. Farm production relates to the total outturn of the given commodity, irrespective of use, whether sold, consumed by the farm family or consumed in production of further farm products on the farm where grown. Average farm price is the weighted average of prices received by farmers at usual marketing points for quantities sold during a crop year. Cash farm income is intended to represent the money income of farmers from crop and animal products and is obtained by evaluating, at the average farm price, quantities produced during a crop year and sold or held for sale. Farm value may be obtained by evaluating farm production at the average farm price and would differ from cash farm income by including value of quantities used on the farm where produced. * Includes government payments of $2,815,000. -2- OREGON CASH FARM INCOME FROM CERTAIN SPECIALTY FARM PRODUCTS BY TYPE OF FARMING DISTRICTS Each dot () represents $100,000 from crop and animal products. 1936 DISTRICT NO.4 'DISTRICT ' S.. .. Hence, all of the state total $11,143,000 should not be regarded as additional accountable income. Footnotes to tables 2 to 6 inclusive, indicate a duplication of $3,945,000 income. It is not possible, however, to state exactly the amount of additional farm income derived from specialty crop and animal products as the survey data on some items such as vegetable seeds, popcorn, minor drug crops, ducks, geese, rabbits for meat, milk goats and their products, honey and some others, are too incomplete to include in the estimates. Furthermore the available estimates of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics are not yet sufficiently itemized to show a complete segregation of 1936 farm income by sources.
