ENDOWED GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FOR
MASTERS OF ART IN TEACHING (MAT) STUDENTS
Virginia A. Arnold graduated from Kent State University in 1956 and embarked on an elementary teaching career in
South Euclid, Arizona, and returned to Grandview Heights, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. She completed her Master of
Arts in Curriculum and Administration and her Ph.D. in Language Arts, Reading, and Children’s Literature at Ohio
State UniversityOver the years she worked in advertising, marketing, and finally as Editor-in-Chief of Elementary
Publications. She believes providing scholarships to talented students offers them the same opportunities she
enjoyed. This scholarship at Kent State University is not only to honor her mother, Rose B. Arnold and her sister,
Lucille Arnold Wilson, but also to thank the College and Graduate School of Education for the excellent learning
experiences that launched her professional career.
Rose B. Arnold was a teacher in West Virginia. She was dedicated to community service in her church and the PTA
where she served on the State Board of the PTA in Ohio. Rose and her husband, Dorsey, reared seven children and
believed in education, and each of their children extended their learning through technical or college education.
Lucille Arnold Wilson graduated from Kent State University in 1936 with a B.A. in English and speech. Her greatest
love was debate and she traveled frequently with the KSU debate team. Lucille returned to KSU in the late fifties to
receive her teaching credentials. She taught English in the high schools of Rootstown and Tallmadge, Ohio. Her
teaching career was an example of how talented women and men can make a significant contribution to teaching later
in life.

1. Must be a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching program;
2. Minimum grade point average of 3.0;
3. Demonstrate financial need; FAFSA will be used to determine need

1. Complete this application
2. Prepare a one-page, typed essay in response to the following:
a. “Why I am Exploring Teaching as a Second Career.”
3. Submit the completed application and typed essay response by July 15th
4. All submitted applications will be reviewed for match with the intended purpose of the scholarship.
