Texas State Literacy Plan (TSLP) Online Course – Implementation Module Lesson 4 Transcript Narrator The campus-‐based leadership team at ABC Elementary School has completed their TSLP Implementation Plan, and they are ready for step 4, Implementation. Their timeline lays out what they need to do over the following months. The first action item is to communicate the implementation plan to the school staff. Ms. Jackson used the summary page to develop her “big picture” presentation and a one-‐page handout for staff. Ms. Jackson We have an established practice of data meetings, and we want to build on that by looking at how we use data in planning and adjusting instruction. The goal is to increase the impact we have on student success in reading and writing. Narrator Ms. Jackson is careful to address the potential challenge of teachers being uncomfortable with visitors to their data meetings. Ms. Jackson The person visiting your data meetings will make note of current practices he or she observes. I want to assure you that no team or teacher is being evaluated in these observations. The purpose is to determine the strengths we have in using data and to identify some areas we can improve in. From there, it will be our job to provide you with the guidance and professional development needed to make those improvements. © 2014 Texas Education Agency/The University of Texas Systems 1 Texas State Literacy Plan (TSLP) Online Course – Process Module Lesson 4 Transcript Narrator The team members begin to work on the other action items as well. They receive training on the observation form and begin to visit data meetings. Mr. Winters and Ms. Montero start to interview fellow teachers as their schedules allow. And throughout the implementation time, the team continues to hold its weekly meetings. Sometimes, the goal of the meeting is to do the work outlined in their plan, such as discussing data analysis research. Other times, the team uses their meeting to check in on the progress of their implementation. Ms. Crimson I’ve attended two data meetings. Mr. Winters I have one tomorrow. Ms. Montero I’ve attended one so far. And I am wondering how we will use all of these notes when we’re finished. Mr. Crimson I wondered that, too. How should we organize them—you know, so it is easy to understand and use? Mr. Green That’s a good question. Ms. Jackson Well, I think a summary report based on the observation form would be useful to create a full picture of data use across campus by combining all of our observations. Mr. Green If everyone turns their observation forms in to me, I can compile that for you. Ms. Jackson Thank you, Mr. Green. Let’s add that to our timeline: to submit observation forms to Mr. Green. © 2014 Texas Education Agency/The University of Texas Systems 2 Texas State Literacy Plan (TSLP) Online Course – Process Module Lesson 4 Transcript Narrator The conversations in these weekly meetings naturally take them into step 5, Assessing Progress. They are checking to see if they are on track with their timeline, and they make adjustments to their plan as needed. Here, assessing progress is like formative assessment—that is, they are informing their actions as they continue the implementation of their plan. They will do a more summative assessment when they reach the expected completion date for their plan. But for now, the team stays in contact with one another, with the data teams they are assigned to, and with the campus at large. (calendar pages flip, showing passage of time) Mr. Winters Wow! We’ve really accomplished a lot. Ms. Montero I actually love highlighting the action items when they’re completed. Ms. Jackson It is satisfying to see our progress. Thank you, everyone, for all your hard work so far. Mr. Green And remember to send me your observation forms to compile. Ms. Jackson Yes. In just a couple weeks, we’re going to look at all the data we’ve collected. I’ve arranged for us to have a longer meeting, so we can thoroughly analyze and discuss it. Ms. Crimson I’m so glad. We’re collecting a lot of good information. Mr. Winters And we’ll have important decisions to make. Having the time to talk about everything will make a difference. Ms. Jackson Great. So make sure that meeting is on your calendars. Between now and then, the next few weeks are going to be pretty busy. © 2014 Texas Education Agency/The University of Texas Systems 3 Texas State Literacy Plan (TSLP) Online Course – Process Module Lesson 4 Transcript Ms. Montero That’s true, but the good thing is we planned our timeline knowing that there’s a lot going on this time of year. Mr. Green Yeah. I gave myself a big enough window to get everything done. Mr. Winters Yeah. We’ll manage. Ms. Jackson Great! Then let’s continue to work through the action items on our plan, check in weekly, and address any challenges or changes as needed. Narrator The work the team is doing is focused on the Action Step and Indicators they selected. The goals are to set expectations for data meetings and to assess needs for professional development on data analysis. The team gathers for an extended meeting to review the data and research they have collected in order to make decisions related to these goals. Ms. Jackson presents the data meeting summary report that Mr. Green compiled. Ms. Montero and Mr. Winters share a presentation with key points and compelling quotations from the teacher interviews. Mr. Green provides a T-‐chart that summarizes the effective practices and areas for growth that he has witnessed in working with teachers and teams as a literacy coach. They spend time discussing the information they have shared and ultimately determine some key areas of need for professional development. Ms. Jackson Thanks for such a great discussion, everyone. Mr. Winters You know, these observations have really taught me a lot. Ms. Montero Yeah, along with the research we studied and the training we had last month, I definitely feel a lot more knowledgeable about what a strong data meeting should look like. © 2014 Texas Education Agency/The University of Texas Systems 4 Texas State Literacy Plan (TSLP) Online Course – Process Module Lesson 4 Transcript Mr. Green Okay. So let’s talk about that. Our next task is to develop the expectations and agenda for our data meetings. Narrator The team works to develop the expectations and agenda for data meetings, using the experience and information they have gathered as a team. There are still more action items to do, and they will continue with their implementation plan through its completion date. Even though there will always be more work to do, they have identified this completion date to more fully assess their implementation and determine what their next steps will be. © 2014 Texas Education Agency/The University of Texas Systems 5
