FOUNDATIONS, LEADERSHIP
AND ADMINISTRATION
Excellence in Action
College of Education, Health and Human Services
The School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in hospitality
management, the Bachelor of Science in sport administration, the Bachelor of Science in educational studies and the Bachelor of
Science in recreation, park and tourism management.
Hospitality Management
Kent State University offers the only four-year hospitality management program in Ohio accredited by the Accreditation Commission
for Programs in Hospitality Administration. The program has been
continuously accredited since 2002. The Hospitality Management
Program prepares leaders for careers in major hospitality industry
segments through academic and research programs valuing quality
of life, business success, collaborative partnerships, creative
approaches and ethical principles.
Graduates look forward to well-compensated positions in the
industry as managers in restaurants, hotels, casino hotels, conference
centers, country clubs and other hospitality venues. The Hospitality
Management Program curriculum combines specialty classes in
hospitality management and business management coursework.
Students gain experience in the field through food labs, class assignments associated with university dining and other area hospitality
businesses and a practicum during the junior or senior year.
Nationally and internationally, the affiliated student chapters of
Professional Convention Management Association of America (PCMA),
Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) and Eta Sigma Delta
International Hospitality Management Society provide opportunities
for leadership development and networking. Additional opportunities
for students to be involved beyond the classroom include a mentoring
program with Northeast Ohio hospitality leaders and the Kent State
University Campus Kitchens project. Students and faculty enjoy the
support of Kent State University Dining Services and members of the
Hospitality Management Advisory Board for many of the program
initiatives. Annually the Schwebel Guest Lecture Series features
leading hospitality professionals.

Sport Administration
The Sport Administration Program prepares students for careers in the
sport industry through a balanced academic program and numerous
practical experiences. Students complete a core group of courses
developed to exceed accreditation guidelines, and all students are
required to complete the business minor. A 2.75 high school grade
point average (GPA) is required for incoming freshman admission.
Transfer students and current Kent State students who are interested in
changing majors will need a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to enter the sport
management major. Upon completion of the major, students will have
the opportunity to pursue numerous career paths in the sport industry
such as, managing sport programs at all levels (youth, high school,
collegiate and professional) facility management, event planning,
sport marketing and public relations. Students have the opportunity
to enter as a cohort taking courses together throughout their
academic career.

Educational Studies
The Educational Studies Program is unique and is designed for
individuals who choose to work as educators in human services and
resource settings such as business and industry; outdoor education;
and religious, community or interest and advocacy groups.
Individualized programs are developed to reflect a consideration
for the nature of the setting in which educators will work (e.g.,
youth center, social agency, museum, park, business), the particular
skills and competencies required in such an educational career
(e.g., program planning, technology utilization, interpersonal and
multicultural facilitation) and the nature of the particular educational
function which characterizes the options (program design,
instruction, service delivery).

Education-Abroad Opportunities
International experience contributes significantly to a
well-rounded education. Students entering the job market
with international experience offer employers perspectives
and world views that are increasingly desirable.
Hospitality management students interested in international
hospitality practicum experiences, please visit with a
hospitality faculty member. In 2011, students will be able to
study for a semester in Florence, Italy.
