ART
COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
The School of Art at Kent State University is one of the largest and most comprehensive university art departments in the state of Ohio,
offering undergraduate and graduate programs in art education, art history, crafts and fine art. The school is accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Art and Design.
Degree Programs
Bachelor of Arts
Crafts or FINE Art
This program is designed for students not wishing to pursue a professional
arts degree but who desire foundational skills in and a basic understanding
of the concepts and methods of the visual arts, combined with a liberal
education curriculum. Those with strong visual learning preferences and
general interest in the arts will find this degree program a good fit.
Art Education
The program includes Ohio licensure for the teaching of art — to
students ranging from pre-kindergarteners to adult learners — with
significant teaching experience prior to graduation.
Art History
This program provides a liberal education in the history of the visual
arts, with opportunities to explore connections to history, literature,
languages, and social sciences. The degree prepares students for
advanced study resulting in research and publication, university
teaching, and library/museum/gallery careers.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
Graduates with the B.F.A. go on to pursue professions as exhibiting artists,
production crafts people, designers for industry and university teachers.
Scholarships/Financial Aid
Majors in art are eligible for scholarships and other forms of
financial assistance through programs administered by the School
of Art, the Student Financial Aid Office and the Honors College.
Declared majors in art education, art history, crafts and fine arts are
eligible for scholarships based on merit and financial need, as well
as review of portfolio materials. Reviews are conducted each fall
and spring for enrolled students.
All current scholarships for incoming and enrolled art majors are
listed at http://www.kent.edu/art/scholarships. In addition, awards
for the Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art competition are
applied for through your high school.
Each February the Honors College sponsors the Creative Artist
Awards competitions for high school seniors intending to major in
art. Applications can be obtained from the Honors College, CAA
Program, Kent State University, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242-0001,
telephone number 330-672-2312.
Transfer Students
Students transferring from another institution present a portfolio for
review by School faculty members. Transfer credit is based in part
upon conformity with Ohio Transfer Articulation Guidelines, while
class placement depends on results of the review.
Crafts
Concentrated pre-professional study is available in each of the following
areas: ceramics, glass, jewelry/metals/enameling and textile arts.
Fine Art
Areas of pre-professional studio concentration include painting, drawing,
printmaking and sculpture, as well as interdisciplinary exploration.
Master of Fine Arts
and Master of Arts
Graduate programs leading to the Master of Fine Arts are available in
crafts and fine art. Programs leading to the Master of Arts are available
in art education, art history, crafts and fine art.
Special Programs
The Kent/Blossom Art Program
The two-week intensive workshops of Kent/Blossom Art emphasize
the exchange of creative concepts and techniques drawn from diverse
visual media. Informal interactions among students and faculty – both
resident and visiting – along with public presentations and exhibitions
provide the means of exploring ideas and values beyond the student’s
primary medium. Some workshops may involve off-site activities
or travel. Undergraduate and graduate credit is available, as are
tuition scholarships. Admission by portfolio review in April. For
additional information, contact the School of Art, 330-672-1352 or
