Annual Report 2007-2008
Executive Summary
Assessment-Related Faculty/ Staff Development Activities. Assessment and programmatic continuous
improvement are faculty-driven efforts. To better handle these responsibilities, faculty and
administrators hosted and / or attended a number of prestigious assessment conferences and seminars
during AY 2007-08.
Western Assessment Conference: The 12th Annual Western Assessment Conference, sponsored by
the College and organized with the help of the Assessment Center, was held on March 20, 2008. The
conference provided workshops in assessment and program evaluation. The conference offered three
series of workshops with over 20 total presenters. The keynote speakers were assessment experts David
Shulenburger from National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and Barbara
Wright from WASC. Conference attendance was similar to last year with about 100 attendees.
CSU Business Schools Assurance of Learning Meeting: For the first time, the College hosted this
meeting. Twenty-five faculty and administrators from CSU campuses throughout the state attended this
one day meeting. Assessment best practices were the focus of the lively discussions and presentations
made throughout the day.
AACSB Maintenance of Accreditation Seminar: On February 6, 2008, the College assessment
coordinator attended the AACSB Maintenance of Accreditation Seminar in San Antonio, Texas. The
seminar clarified several areas regarding the five-year AACSB maintenance visit scheduled for
February 2009, including details about writing the report and the visit.
CSUF Summer Institute on Program Review and Assessment: On June 10, 2008, the College
assessment coordinator and members of the economics department attended a CSUF institute on
assessment. Swarup Wood from CSU, Monterey Bay led exercises to define learning objectives,
outcomes and measurement methods. An assessment program by the CSUF biology department was
also featured.
Core Course Coordinator Actions: The Core Course Coordinators continued to monitor courseembedded assessments, listen to presentations and give comments regarding course-embedded
assessments, and discussed new ideas for program development. A new idea for program development
born in the CCC is an integrated program for honors students. Guest speakers, included Gerald Patton,
the new Director of Assessment for the University. Additionally, two coordinators made presentations at
the Western Assessment Conference regarding their involvement in course-embedded assessments.
Other Surveys: To monitor perceptions and make improvements the College also employs
indirect measures through survey research. The surveys have given rich data and insight greatly
appreciated by the faculty, staff and administration. Figure 6 below illustrates our survey schedule.
