GAVILAN COLLEGE Aviation Maintenance Technology Program SHOP SAFTEY RULES Name (print) School Year Safety education has as its primary objective the prevention of accidents. Accidents, which result in injury to personnel, are usually caused by carelessness or ignorance of basic rules of safety. The same can be said of accidents, which cause damage to building facilities and equipment. With this in mind, you as a student at Gavilan College Aviation will be given instruction in safety, along with other instructions. Your cooperation is expected, as you can never be an effective worker unless you are a safe one. The following list of safety precautions has been compiled to give you a basic idea of what is expected while you are in the Aviation Program at Gavilan College. These precautions are designed not only to make you a safe student with whom to work, but a safe employee once you enter your respective trade in society upon your graduation. Following each precaution is a blank space for you to initial. Your initial indicates that the preceding statement has been read by you and that there is no doubt about its meaning. 1. I will report all accidents to my instructor at once, especially injury accidents. 2. I will not run, throw objects or engage in horseplay of any nature while in the Aviation shop or hanger. This includes riding carts and lifts or other moving objects. 3. I will not smoke in the shop at any time. I will smoke in assigned areas only. I will smoke only during breaks and properly dispose of my ashes and cigarette butts. 4. I will not attempt to operate any machine or piece of equipment until I have been given instruction and am authorized by my instructor to do so. 5. I will see that all machinery and equipment is shut down and disconnected from its power source before I attempt to repair or adjust it. 6. I will not operate any machine with missing or defective guards and will report it to my instructor. 7. I will not attempt to repair or tamper with electrical wiring. 8. I will wear rubber gloves when working with any acid or caustic material. If any of these materials should come into contact with my skin, I will rinse the affected area with fresh water immediately and notify my instructor. 9. I will wear proper eye protection when using power tools 10. I will keep the floor in my working area clean at all times. I will clean up all spills, and will place all scrap material in the proper receptacle. 11. I will inspect ladders carefully before using them, be sure they have secure footing, and straight ladders are placed against the wall at a safe angle. 12. I will wear proper eye protection when drilling, grinding and cutting. 13. I will remove scraps and chips from machines with the proper brush or tool. I realize that using my hands for this may result in permanent injury. 14. I will put all stock and tools back in the proper rack when through with them, as improperly stored materials may cause injury. GAVILAN COLLEGE SHOP SAFETY RULES Page 2 15. I will see that burred heads of chisels, punches, etc. are ground smooth and square before using them. I will turn in all broken tools. 16. I will get help lifting heavy or awkward objects, and will lift with my legs and keep my back straight. 17. I will keep all cutting tools sharp and clean, and will cut away from my body when using sharp-edged hand tools. 18. I will open all high-pressure valves slowly, and stand away from the cylinder valves when opening, and avoid using force. 19. I will never cut or weld an unvented container, and will work only on objects which have been approved by my instructor. 20. I will only use air hoses to clean equipment when told to do so by my instructor, and will never play with the air hoses. 21. I will wear a respirator when spraying any toxic materials, such as paint, lacquer or dope. 22. I will place all dirty rags in the proper metal container to avoid fires. 23. I will use a dust mask when sanding, filing or grinding composites. 24. I will avoid prolonged breathing of any volatile materials such as lacquer, gasoline, and rubber cement. I will be sure there is adequate ventilation because the fumes can cause serious bodily injury. 25. I will always use the proper goggles or hood, and never look at a welding arc with the naked eye, as this can cause blindness. 26. I will always remove the key from the drill and lathe chucks after tightening or loosening it. 27. I will be sure the propeller area is clear before starting any aircraft engine. I will stay clear of the propeller area when the engine is running. 28. I will treat all aircraft engines as if the ignition system is on. 29. I will see that a fire extinguisher is readily available before starting an engine. 30. I will wear proper shop attire including closed toed shoes and long pants. 31. I will wear proper eye protection while cutting safety wire. I will control all clippings and dispose of them properly.
