APPLICATION FOR ENERGY EXPERIENCES PROGRAM, MAY 2016

NOTICES: Students must read and acknowledge.

The “Energy Experiences” course is a unique course developed under sponsorship of the US Department of Energy and in partnership with area utilities and companies. It is coordinated by PEIK (the Power and

Energy Institute of Kentucky) at the University of Kentucky. The program offers students an “inside” opportunity to visit industrial sites related to power and energy and to speak with the engineers and operators about the sites and their technologies. Students prepare the visits in advance through online readings and assignments. The students then document their learning through developing a journal that is submitted after the visits. Students earn 3 credit hours through the experience.

The site visits all occur within a five day period. Travel is via a chartered bus, with arranged hotel stays on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Because of limited space in the program, students are required to complete the application on the page 2. Students submitting the application are acknowledging the following:

1.) The course occurs during summer session I. The course is available at both the 5xx and the 6xx course levels.

2.) Prior to the week of site visits, students will be required to do preparatory readings, videos, and assignments. These will be coordinated online, and there will be no meeting of the course prior to an orientation on Sunday afternoon of May 22. Students are required to be at the predeparture orientation on the afternoon of Sunday May 22.

3.) Students will visit the sites via a chartered bus. The bus will depart on Monday morning May

23 and will not return to Lexington until Friday evening May 27.

During this time, students will be staying in hotels and will not be returning to Lexington.

4.) Costs: a.

Students are billed tuition and standard engineering fees through the University. There are no additional course-specific fees for 2016. The cost of the chartered bus and hotels are covered through PEIK and its industrial sponsors. b.

Breakfast will be provided with each hotel stay. Students are responsible for the cost of their own lunch and dinner. Typically one of these meals will be at a fast food site, and the other meal will be at a moderately priced sit-down restaurant (such as Cracker

Barrel or Applebee’s). Students should budget accordingly.

5.) At the industrial sites, students will be required to climb stairs and do significant walking.

Students also are required to dress appropriately for the industrial visits. This includes closedtoed shoes, long slacks, pants, or good jeans (no holes), and a preferably-collared shirt without offensive images or slogans.

6.) Travel documents: a.

Some sites visited are US government sites and require background information prior to the visit. b.

During the visit, US citizens and permanent residents will need to have their driver’s license, passport, or other official documentation. International students will need to have their passports. c.

Students from some designated countries (primarily Iran, North Korea, and Syria) may have special restrictions. These students should speak to the instructor to determine if their citizenship will limit their participation.
