Academic S.T.A.R.S. (Students Achieving and Reaching for Success) is a transition and retention program for newly
admitted African-American, Latino American and Native American freshman students who want to enhance their
opportunity for academic success and enrich their college experience. This program begins with a six-week
summer institute where students will take two courses (College Writing I and Black Experience I) and earn six
college credits that count toward graduation. Student will continue receiving on-going support in the fall and
spring semesters of their first year. As a result of participating in S.T.A.R.S., students will develop:

Academic, personal, professional and social skills
•
A sense of community with peers and staff
•
A sense of cultural identity and self-awareness
