Triangle MicroWorks and Cooper Power Systems Demonstrate DNP3
Secure Authentication version 5 Interoperability at DistribuTECH 2013
Providing an open-standard approach to solving Smart Grid authentication
requirements
Waukesha, WI, March 19, 2013 – Cooper Power Systems and Triangle MicroWorks, both
pioneers in the DNP3 Secure Authentication field, participated in a DNP3 interoperability session
hosted by the DNP – Distributed Network Protocol – Users Group at the DistribuTECH 2013
Conference in San Diego, CA, in January, 2013. The interoperability setup worked seamlessly for
the entire duration of the event, clearly demonstrating that Cooper Power Systems and Triangle
successfully implemented version 5 of DNP3 Secure Authentication in their products.
The interoperability setup consisted of Triangle’s Test Harness, acting as a control center,
connected using DNP3 Secure Authentication version 5 to two communication gateways:
Triangle’s SCADA Data Gateway and the Cooper Power Systems SMP 4/DP Distribution
Processor. Both gateways were connected to IEDs from different vendors, using DNP3 Secure
Authentication version 2.
“This interoperability session clearly showcased Cooper Power Systems’ strengths and expertise in
Smart Grid solutions, especially in the communications and cyber-security fields,” said Tom
Pitstick, vice president and general manager, Energy Automation Solutions group, Cooper Power
Systems.
Erin Hall, vice president of sales and marketing, Triangle MicroWorks, stated, “We are proud of the
DNP Technical Committee effort to create Secure Authentication version 5 in response to Utility
concerns about cyber security. It is an honor for us to participate in the evolution of communication
protocol standards in the Utility Industry and the creation of products to support them.”
