A major fire destroyed an apartment complex in Montgomery
County, PA, displacing over 370 residents in August, 2008.
While firefighters were still fighting the blaze, emergency
coordinators at the county operations center configured a
new distribution group on the county’s community warning
system. Once the fire was contained, this delivery group on
the system was used to communicate important messaging
to the displaced residents about issues like how to replace
social security cards and vital records, the location of their
incoming postal mail, and their ability to return to their homes
to identify salvageable belongings.
