According to degree requirements, music majors must participate for credit in a large performing ensemble each semester. These involvement opportunities give students diverse performing experiences. E D U / S TA R K / M U S I C MUSIC DEGREES MUSIC TECHNOLOGY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Kent State University at Stark offers programs leading to undergraduate degrees for students who seek a high level of professional competence in instrumental, vocal or music technology. Opportunities available to graduates in music from Kent State University are numerous and varied. Kent State alumni have outstanding records as classroom teachers, composers, performers, and band, orchestra and choral conductors. Others have chosen from careers as instrument retailers, instrument repairers, music license administrators, music researchers, technicians, music librarians, studio teachers, sound technicians, and audio and recording engineers. An audition and theory placement test is required before admission to all programs. Students may complete approximately two years of coursework toward the Bachelor of Music degrees before transitioning to the Kent Campus. The Bachelor of Science in Music Technology must be completed at the Stark Campus. BACHELOR OF ARTS APPLIED MUSIC COURSES Bachelor of Arts majors have an opportunity to study music and liberal arts with an optional minor, available in most academic areas of the university, or as a dual degree program with a major in another field. This degree includes study on a main instrument and ensemble participation throughout the program. Applied music courses are individualized music classes in which students, working one-on-one with their instructors, concentrate on the development of performance skills on a particular musical instrument or voice. Students must audition for approval to register for applied music courses. ACCREDITATION The Kent State Stark Music Department, as part of the Glauser School of Music, is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN MUSIC EDUCATION The curriculum for Music Education is one of the most forwardlooking curricula in the country and includes work in jazz, folk, musical theatre and music from around the world. This degree prepares students to teach kindergarten through 12th grade music in any public school in Ohio and is also recognized in most states. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY (see center panel) MUSIC MINORS Students in the College of the Arts or in Arts and Sciences may declare a minor in music, audio recording, music technology/ production or world music. Acceptance is by audition. Students may complete the entire music minor program at Kent State Stark. WHY MUSIC? Kent State University at Stark offers a complete four-year curriculum in music technology leading to the Bachelor of Science in Music Technology degree. The degree is only offered at Kent State University’s Stark Campus. Students concentrate on courses in music production and audio recording, using state-of-the-art technology. Students work in two music computer production labs and two recording labs on campus, as well as at Kopperhead recording and music services in nearby North Canton. The development of musicianship knowledge and skills in traditional and popular styles are also an important component of the curriculum. FACILITIES & CLASSROOMS Individual practice rooms are available for music students in the Fine Arts building, in addition to an electronic keyboard lab with state-of-the-art digital pianos. A theory classroom is located near the music production and audio production labs and a large lecture space and rehearsal hall with computer and complete audio visual capability are located within the music wing of the Fine Arts building. PERFORMANCE HALLS The Fine Arts building at Kent State Stark offers a 360-seat theatre and a concert band shell for band performances. In addition, Main Hall Auditorium offers approximately 360 seats for recitals and chamber ensemble performances. The University Center offers performance facilities for chamber concerts and jazz performances in the Timken Great Hall and in the Dining Room.
