Athletic Training Program “First Year Review” application and Interview information Students that complete the Practicum I semester will be given the opportunity to apply for a “First Year” review. To begin the review process, the student will complete an application for continuation in the Athletic Training Program. In addition, the student will sit for an interview with the Athletic Training Program advisory committee. The interview will consist of a review of the application, review of the Practicum I Student Performance Evaluations, questions to evaluate clinical and critical thinking skills, appearance and demeanor. The following outlines the guidelines for the “First Year” review process. To be eligible you must have completed (NOT in progress) the following criteria: 1. Completion of 36 hours towards a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of a cumulative 2.8 GPA 2. Application must be submitted to the program coordinator with the following: a. Three letters of recommendation-­‐2 professional and one personal. (You may not use a staff athletic trainer/Athletic Training faculty member at EMU.) i. The letters may be sent to the program coordinator or clinical coordinator directly or submitted with the application ii. Students are advised to start early to allow time for the recommendations to be written, sent, and received. 3. A biographical sketch must be included. This is a brief synopsis of your background to include: where you are from, your , activities, how you became interested in Athletic Training and what are your career goals. 4. You must also include a one page response to complete the statement: a. “I should be admitted into the athletic training program at EMU because…” This should include justification as to why you should be admitted into the program (i.e. evaluations, grades in AT courses, personal qualities, etc.) 5. You must have completed the following courses: a. ATTR 225 Practicum I * b. ATTR 201/202 Anatomy and Physiology for Athletic Training * c. CHEM 120 Organic and Biochemistry or CHEM 121/122 ** d. ATTR 219 Intro to Athletic Training * i. * A grade of B or better must be earned in these courses ii. ** A grade of C or better must be earned in these courses 6. Applicants must pass the Practicum I exit exam with an 80%. The student will have 2 chances to pass this exam with a grade of 80%. The Athletic Training Program Advisory Committee reserves the right to determine the method of selecting students for admission into the Athletic Training Program. Criteria for selection include but not limited to GPA, level of student interest in the profession, application, and interview. Eastern Michigan University “First Year Review” Rubric Clinical Evaluations -­‐ Must have all 4 completed, signed and dated 50 points Academic Record 20 points Cumulative GPA Points 3.5 – 4.0 = 20 points 3.25 – 3.5 = 18 points 3.00 – 3.25 = 16 points 2.8 – 3.00 = 14 points 2.79 and below student is not eligible to interview Essays submitted 25 points Grammar, punctuation, spelling, essay format (5 pts) Knowledge, interest and justification about acceptance (10 pts) Biographical Sketch (10 pts) Letters of Recommendation 5 points Interview 100 points Total points 200 points Members of the EMU Athletic Training Advisory Committee will do an evaluation of all application materials and interviews. It will be based on a total of 200 points with a minimum of 150 points to qualify. The ATP Program reserves the right to remove a student due to an outstanding circumstance that may affect the student’s ability to continue on in the program successfully. This includes but is not limited to changes in student’s ability to adhere to the technical standards, student’s demeanor during the clinical experience, failure to adhere to the cyber ethical standard etc. Eastern Michigan University “First Year Review” Interview Rubric Professional Appearance/Demeanor 15 pts. Skill Performed: 15 pts. Ethical Dilemmas 10 pts. Professionalism 10 pts. Critical Thinking 20 pts. Interview: 5 pts. Cognitive: 25 pts. 1. 50 point Practicum I exit exam 100% = 25 pts. 90% = 15 pts. 80% = 05 pts.* *A student that scores below 80% will not be allowed to sit for an interview. The student will be allowed 2 tries to score 80% on the Practicum I exit exam. A student who is not accepted into the Athletic Training Program during the “First Year Review” but wishes to reapply must do so the following fall semester. In addition, the student will be required to retake the Practicum I course and go through the entire First Year Review Process again.
