The
department
F2 Respiratory Medicine
The respiratory department cares for inpatients with a full range of acute and chronic
respiratory conditions. There are consultants with interests in COPD, asthma, TB, NIV,
lung infection, lung cancer, pleural disease. There are nurse specialists in asthma,
COPD, lung cancer and TB and a specialist respiratory physiotherapy team. The
department is active in undergraduate training and research. The F2 doctor is a crucial
part of this team who needs to support and manage the F1 doctors

Main duties of
 Take responsibility for support, guidance and management of the F1 doctors
the placement
 Attend all ward rounds which occur daily, and assist with the jobs generated
 To perform several ABGs per day, analyse results and treat the
patient accordingly- with advice and recommendations from the team
 To make referrals to other specialities
 To write the medical sections of rehab/hospice referral forms
 To attend the weekly X ray and Respiratory team meetings
 To assist with discharge summaries
 To attend daily board rounds on MAU and communicate info about each patient
including outstanding investigations and EDDs
 To arrange inpatient/outpatient investigations including sleep studies, pulmonary
function tests, on-ward spirometry
 To make referrals to the Respiratory CNS’s/Physios

On call requirements: Cover cardiology.
 Variable working pattern- number of patients is very variable, often depending
on time of year (i.e. more acute Respiratory patients in Winter months).
 Hours are typically 0900 – 1800
 Typically 2 on call weekends for Cardiology.
