North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Placement The department F2 Respiratory Medicine The respiratory department cares for inpatients with a full range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. There are consultants with interests in COPD, asthma, TB, NIV, lung infection, lung cancer, pleural disease. There are nurse specialists in asthma, COPD, lung cancer and TB and a specialist respiratory physiotherapy team. The department is active in undergraduate training and research. The F2 doctor is a crucial part of this team who needs to support and manage the F1 doctors The type of Board rounds work to expect Ward rounds and learning Bloods opportunities ABG’s TTAs Opportunity to insert chest drains Teaching sessions and x-ray meetings weekly Teaching medical students Location Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Supervisor(s) Dr Paul Dilworth Main duties of Take responsibility for support, guidance and management of the F1 doctors the placement Attend all ward rounds which occur daily, and assist with the jobs generated To perform several ABGs per day, analyse results and treat the patient accordingly- with advice and recommendations from the team To make referrals to other specialities To write the medical sections of rehab/hospice referral forms To attend the weekly X ray and Respiratory team meetings To assist with discharge summaries To attend daily board rounds on MAU and communicate info about each patient including outstanding investigations and EDDs To arrange inpatient/outpatient investigations including sleep studies, pulmonary function tests, on-ward spirometry To make referrals to the Respiratory CNS’s/Physios Typical Mon: Every day from 0845 – 1745 working Tues: pattern in this Wed: placement Thurs: Fri: Sat: Sun: On call requirements: Cover cardiology. Variable working pattern- number of patients is very variable, often depending on time of year (i.e. more acute Respiratory patients in Winter months). Hours are typically 0900 – 1800 Typically 2 on call weekends for Cardiology.
