North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description – North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement F2 Public Health in Haringey Local Authority Directorate of Public Health in Haringey Council. This is a lively multi-disciplinary department of approximately 30 staff from a range of backgrounds. The Director is Dr Jeanelle De Gruchy, supported by a Senior Management Team of five. The work of the department is driven by the Health and Wellbeing Strategy, Haringey’s Corporate Plan and the statutory functions of public health (e.g. health protection). The department has strong relationships and works closely with the Clinical Commissioning Group, other council departments such as leisure services and children’s services and partners. The aim of the department is to improve health and reduce health inequalities in the communities in the borough of Haringey. http://www.haringey.gov.uk/publichealth The trainee would agree project work with the clinical supervisor and be supervised by senior members of the department on each project. Examples would be a population needs assessment (involving report writing, data interpretation, service description), qualitative research such as focus groups, care pathway development or literature reviews. There will be shadowing opportunities to understand the role of public health, the CCG and the council. Key training would include: motivational interviewing training to support behaviour change and stop smoking training. The core public health functions are improving health (e.g. commissioning prevention programmes), technical public health support to improve health and social care quality (e.g. evaluation of programmes) and health protection (e.g. emergency planning and communicable disease control). The trainee would work to the supervisor and be expected to lead, support or complete specific projects. Projects will be selected in discussion with the clinical supervisor to ensure a range of projects and taking into account the interests and skills of the trainee and the needs of the department. The range of skills used would include: Literature review Data analysis and presentation Report writing Presentation skills Interviewing skills Project management skills The trainee is expected to attend Monday morning briefings and departmental meetings (fortnightly). There will be opportunities for shadowing and an expectation that some elements of basic public health/health improvement training would be undertaken eg motivational interviewing. Study leave and working at home are to be discussed with the clinical supervisor. The day to day work would be within the hours of 9 to 5 five days per week. There will be some additional evening meetings which are usually optional. The work is mainly office based. There will be meetings on and off site. Some projects and shadowing opportunities will give opportunities for working within the community with community groups.
