NSF INTERNATIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: CLASSIFICATION: LINE OF BUSINESS: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: Intern, Exposures Non-Exempt Technical Operations Chemistry - Exposures Group Leader, Exposures BASIC PURPOSE: The intern will support the Exposures lab by providing assistance to various projects as needed. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. With direction, assist with basic exposure and laboratory tasks. This includes: 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Glassware washing. Exposure water and buffer production. Exposure water changes. Sample preparation. Sample delivery/return. Use of various power tools. Adhere to all laboratory, quality and safety procedures/policies. Work in a team oriented environment. Professional communication through verbal and non-verbal means. Using MSDS’s work with various chemicals, solvents, acids, and bases. Maintain a clean work area. Perform other duties as requested. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be a high school graduate and actively pursuing a higher level of education. 2. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc. 3. Strong written and oral communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Dedicated university student enrolled in a chemistry or related science program. 2. Previous work experience in a laboratory setting is preferred. PHYSICAL DEMAND: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Up to 90% standing, walking between areas within the laboratory and building. Ability to lift approximately 60 pounds. Work with various chemicals, solvents, acids, and bases with MSDS use. Reaching and handling samples within hot and room temperature settings. Visual skills are required to notice certain aspects of samples and dirty exposure vessels. Ability to operate and safely use various hand tools and power tools such as: band saw, power drills and wrenches. WORK ENVIRONMENT: 1. Work performed in a laboratory and office environments. No colognes, perfumes or scented hand lotions or creams are allowed due to sample contamination concerns. 3. Wet floors and wet feet are common. 4. Use of PPE (personal protective equipment) such as latex/nitrile gloves, safety glasses, lab coat and/or uniform. 5. Steel toe boots/shoes required. 6. Minimum ½ hour lunch break. 7. Potential weekend and evening shifts are possible. 8. Smoke free work environment.
