McNair Scholars Society: Courtney Raymond, McNair Scholar, and Graduate Assistant, Kelli Dowd The McNair Scholars Program teamed up with the EMU Public Relations Students Society of America (PRSSA), the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and the VISION Volunteer Center to collect canned goods for S.O.S. Washtenaw, a local nonprofit dedicated to ending poverty in Ypsilanti and Washtenaw County. We collected enough food to make a sizeable donation to S.O.S. Thank you to everyone who assisted us with this donation drive! Meetings on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Upcoming meetings are on Jan. 30th, Feb. 13th & Feb. 27th Scholar Accomplishments Community Service: Marcia Molett received a $500 scholarship for books from EMU Black Alumni for the 2012-2013 academic year. Once the weather gets a little warmer we are thinking about a day of service for all of McNair, such as a Habitat for Humanity build or working in Growing Hope community garden. Mayra Rivas and Caprisha Curry both received Study Abroad Scholarships from the Honors program. Courtney Raymond is studying abroad in England this semester at the University of Derby. The 55 students papers in McNair Scholars Research Journal have been downloaded a total 26,461 times! McNair Scholars at the MLK Celebration - Igniting a Generation of Dreamers The following students volunteered for the MLK Celebration: Mimi Bass, Marcia Molett, Sade Wilson, Cherese Colston, Carmen Grange, Charae LondonTerry, Keanu Palmer, & Kryn Ambs. These students sold MLK t-shirts and served as ushers for the luncheon. Scholars also moderated the academic programs. Thank you for your time and for representing McNair so well! Many of our students had a chance to present at the MLK Celebration, too! Carmen Grange, Kimaya Hudgins, & Shanilinin Calderon presented their recently published McNair research in the Academic Program “Education as a Gateway to Civil Rights.” The papers included Carmen Grange’s “How Language Parameter Deficits Impact Social Interaction in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Intervention Strategies,” Kimaya Hudgins’ “Creating a Collaborative and Inclusive Culture for Special Education Needs in Public Education,” and Shanilinin Calderon’s “The Extent of Political Participation Among Latino Non-Citizens and Citizens in the U.S.” Excellent work, Scholars! Along with other members of the Society of African American Studies, this program analyzed and addressed the many generational issues through the lens of hip-hop. Brandon Britt, along with Dr. Raul Leon, Darren McCormick, and Trevis Harrold presented “Global Research on the Black Male Educational Pipeline.” This program presented data from a colloquium at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, which these students attended. The colloquium was designed to examine the Black Male experiencesin higher education. She is originally from Pontiac, MI and is interested in earning a Ph.D. in Literature. Brandon Britt – A Gates Millennium Scholar and Member of the EMU Honors College, Brandon is a sophomore studying Elementary Education with a concentration in Math., Brandon plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and become a Principal or Superintendent. Jamere Dixon – Jamere is a junior studying Political Science and Criminology. She is interested in criminal justice and wants to open shelters to assist homeless families. Chris Haskin – Chris is a Chemistry major and Biology minor from Dexter, MI. He is currently a junior at EMU and is interested in becoming a professor at a research institution. Chris is also a Master Chef, with a degree from the Culinary Arts Institute. Taylor Kirchoff – A sophomore studying Forensic Anthropology, Taylor is interested in excavating grave sites in order “to enrich the common heritage of mankind.” Charae (Rae) London-Terry – Rae is originally from Harbor City, California. She is a junior studying Psychology and Social Work. She is interested in earning her doctoral degree and working to improve the foster care system. Tanjare (Tan) McKay – Tan is originally from Chicago, Illinois and is studying Occupational Therapy and Psychology. She is interested in doing her research in Psychology. Marcia Molett – Marcia is a senior studying Speech Language Pathology. She is originally from Pontiac, MI and wants to do research on speech and language disorders and the psychological and emotional effects on the individual. Keanu Palmer – Keanu is a junior studying Psychology. She plans to treat adolescents and adults suffering from Schizophrenia after obtaining her Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Keanu is originally from Kentucky. Tyreece Rembert –Hailing from Grand Rapids, MI, Tyreece is studying Marketing with a minor in Business Management. He hopes to someday work for a professional sports team. Jazmin Rodgers – Jazmin, member of the EMU Honors College, is a junior studying Business Economics and Psychology. Originally from Detroit, MI, Jazmin intends to obtain a Ph. D. in Educational Psychology, Industrial Psychology or Business Administration. Nathaneil (Nate) Winston – Nate is in African American Studies and Political Science. Originally from Detroit, MI, Nate hopes to earn his Doctorate and teach at university level. Congratulations Scholars! We are looking forward to helping you achieve your dreams!
