I. Rationale
This proposal recommends the title be changed from Tourism Concentration to Geo-tourism
Concentration, in order to update and more appropriately identify the program with both the
sustainable economic development practices promoted by the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation – primarily by means of the “Pure Michigan” national advertizing campaign - as well as by
practices supported by the National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations (SDC).
Although informally in use since 1997, the relatively new noun “geo-tourism” is defined as follows:
“tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, heritage,
aesthetics, culture, and well-being of its residents.” The term is not only a great fit for our holistic
department, with our kindred programs in historic preservation and urban and regional planning, it is
being employed by our competitors in neighboring states.

III. Proposed Revision The proposed revision is to rename the program to Geo-tourism Concentration from the title of Tourism
Concentration that has been in use for the past decade. This name change is consistent with past
practice in the program of emphasizing “appropriate” and/or “community-based” sustainable tourism.
IV. Impact – The impacts on the Tourism Geography Concentration will be positive only:
(1) This
change will better align our program with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s use of the
geo-tourism construct in the “Pure Michigan” national advertising campaign as recommended practice;
and (2) the National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations (SDC); and (3) as well as
align our program with competing academic department’s that offer similar degree programs in the
sub-discipline of tourism geography. No other university programs are impacted by this change.
V. Budget – This recommended change will be budget neutral.
