I. Rationale
These revisions are to align the catalog with current advising practice in the elementary
education mathematics major. We propose to:
a) replace the required course MATH 403 with a choice of either MATH 401 or
MATH 403, and then add MATH 403 to the list of restricted electives—currently we
allow students to count MATH 401 in place of MATH 403 by Substitution Form;
students may take either course, or they may take both courses, one as a required
course and one a restricted elective.
b) add MATH 107 Plane Trigonometry to the list of restricted electives—since majors
are required to take MATH 120 Calculus I and MATH 107 is a prerequisite for that,
this is a very common elective, and currently requires a Substitution Form.
c) delete MATH 110: Mathematical Reasoning from the list of restricted electives—
MATH 110E Mathematical Reasoning: Applications for Elementary School Teachers,
which is a program requirement, satisfies the QR requirement for general education for
students in this program, and so we do not want students to take both MATH 110E and
MATH 110.
d) remove the words “Other mathematics courses as approved by the advising
coordinator for elementary mathematics education”—these words are unnecessary, as
students in any program can ask for a substitution, and the proposed list of restricted
electives covers virtually every case already.
