Rationale for Revision: As of Winter Semester 2012, our two surveys of Hispanic literatures—previously offered on the 300-level as SPNH 301 and SPNH 302—have been moved to the 400-level as SPNH 401 (Advanced Readings in Spanish Literature) and SPNH 402 (Advanced Readings in Spanish American Literature). Among other justifications for this change was to allow these surveys to be scheduled piggy-back with their graduate-level equivalents. One of the prerequisites for these two literature courses when they were offered at the lower level was SPNH 222 Introduction to Hispanic Literatures, the course for which we are requesting a change in level now. Because of their more advanced level, our two surveys of literature now require a greater sophistication and more advanced knowledge of the Spanish language than when they were offered as 300-level courses. The change in level for the introductory literature course (prerequisite for both advanced literature courses) will help better to equip students for the two advanced surveys. For this reason, in the present document we are requesting that the level of SPNH 222 Introduction to Hispanic Literature be raised to SPNH 322. The title will remain the same. In conjunction with this change, we intend to request in an accompanying document that the new SPNH 322 course be listed as the prerequisites for both SPNH 401 and SPNH 402. B.
