Program Revision Guidelines EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DIVISION OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS PROPOSAL TO REVISE A PROGRAM PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MATHEMATICS MAJOR (MTHE) REVISED PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE (IF APPLICABLE): DEGREE: BACHELOR’S DEPARTMENT(S)/SCHOOL(S): CONTACT PERSON: MATHEMATICS STEVE BLAIR COLLEGE(S): CONTACT PHONE: ARTS AND SCIENCES 734 355 8285 CONTACT EMAIL: SBLAIR6@EMICH.EDU REQUESTED START DATE: TERM WINTER YEAR 2016 I. Rationale Students in this program primarily are working for initial certification for grades K-5, but have the option of getting certified to teach mathematics at the middle grades, namely 6-8. The program revision will allow students interested in pursuing teaching at the middle grades to include a course specific to the content and method of middle grades mathematics in their program. Also, adding MATH 304 only to the list of Restrictive Elective Courses (rather than to the Required Area Courses) will not affect students who prefer to take coursework focused at the K-5 level. This revision does not alter the credit hours needed for the program. II. Description of Current Program Content Requirements: 30 hours Required Courses: 22 hours • MATH 108 - Problem Solving and Number Concepts for Elementary School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 110E - Mathematical Reasoning: Applications for Elementary School Teachers (GEQR) 3 hrs • MATH 120 - Calculus I (GEQR) 4 hrs • MATH 210 - Algebra for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 240 - Geometry for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 301 - Advanced Topics in Elementary Mathematics 3 hrs One of the following: • * MATH 401 - Mathematics and Its History for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • * MATH 403 - Current Research in Elementary School Mathematics 3 hrs Restricted Elective Courses: 8 hours Miller, Program Revision Guidelines Sept. 09 Program Revision Guidelines Eight hours from the following. Note that at least 9 hours in the major must be courses 300-level or higher, taken at EMU. • MATH 107 - Plane Trigonometry 2 hrs • MATH 118 - Linear Models and Probability (GEQR) 3 hrs • MATH 122 - Elementary Linear Algebra 3 hrs • MATH 170 - Elementary Statistics (GEQR) 3 hrs • MATH 382 - Technology in the Mathematics Classroom 3 hrs • * MATH 401 - Mathematics and Its History for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • * MATH 403 - Current Research in Elementary School Mathematics 3 hrs III. Proposed Revision We propose adding MATH 304 Middle School Mathematics Methods and Content, 3 hrs., to the list of restricted electives of the program. Content Requirements: 30 hours Required Courses: 22 hours • MATH 108 - Problem Solving and Number Concepts for Elementary School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 110E - Mathematical Reasoning: Applications for Elementary School Teachers (GEQR) 3 hrs • MATH 120 - Calculus I (GEQR) 4 hrs • MATH 210 - Algebra for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 240 - Geometry for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • MATH 301 - Advanced Topics in Elementary Mathematics 3 hrs One of the following: • * MATH 401 - Mathematics and Its History for Elementary/Middle School Teachers 3 hrs • * MATH 403 - Current Research in Elementary School Mathematics 3 hrs Restricted Elective Courses: 8 hours Eight hours from the following. Impact The proposed revision only involves a change in the content requirements of the program and therefore does not impact departments outside of Mathematics. The additional course (MATH 304 Middle School Mathematics Methods and Content) is already in the catalog and will be taught by existing faculty in the department. V. Budget The proposed revision only adds a possible elective involving an already existing course that we plan to offer regularly for our secondary mathematics education major. Therefore, it will not impact the department’s budget. VI. Action of the Department/College 1. Department/School: Vote of faculty: For 13 Against 0 (Enter the number of votes cast in each category.)
