College of Arts and Sciences College Advisory Committee: Science Subcommittee Thursday, April 12, 2012, 3:30 PM 177 Science Complex Present: Angell (BIO), Emal (CHEM), Clark (GEOG&GEOL), Rescorla (MATH), Behringer (PHY & ASTR), Jefferson, (PSY), Nord (Science DH), Tornquist (CAS Dean’s Office) Absent: COSC  We discussed the fact that proposal submission dates are far earlier than their arrival at the CAC Sciences meetings. Simply put, the distribution dates listed do not really allow the Sciences Subcommittee 60 days to review proposals. Sciences Subcommittee would like 2 meetings from when we get the proposal to when it must be processed.  We will review minutes from the April 19th meeting during our next meeting. I. Old Business PEGN 107 – Revisions accepted and proposal approved unanimously. PEGN 204 – Revisions accepted and approved unanimously. PEGN 206 – Revisions accepted and proposal passed: 4 approved/ 1 against. Comment: Contact hours for this course are not consonant with the typical 3 credit course offered at the University. College of Health and Human Services (6 items; 62 pp.) SPMD 550/552/554  Sent Steve a note recommending that he meet with someone in Mathematics. Ernest has heard nothing from Steve about having had such a meeting.  Courses seemed like a duplication of other courses. The response for this comment is that this is a different cohort.  Feedback to Science committee is that the proposers are willing to include some Biology pre-‐requisites. Also, many of the proposals do not include “ands” or “ors” (this should be rectified). Also, the dept. may have problems with students who are transferring in credits for courses that are prerequisites for this course.  Ernest will clarify with Steve about what their perquisites will be (i.e., what are the “ands” and “ors” for the prerequisites for this course?). At present, if Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 1 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University prerequisites are listed without an “or,” it is assumed that a list of prerequisites are all “and.” SPMD 555 Statistics for Performance – New Course (11 pp.)  Tabled: Awaiting response from the proposers. o Still awaiting a meeting between representatives of the departments. SPMD 650 Principles of Strength and Conditioning – New Course (11 pp.)  Application has an error in the title of the course. EXP Exercise Physiology – Program Revision (7 pp.)  Exercise Physiology Program approved with comments. College of Technology (1 item; 20 pp.) TM 306 Quantitative Analysis of Sustainability Issues – New Course (20 pp.)  No feedback from GEO & GEO has been received, so we assumed this indicated that they had not concerned with this course.  Comments: Please use updated forms and remove “Draft” water marks.  Approved unanimously. II. New Business College of Health and Human Services (20 items; 350 pp.) DTC 504 Sports Nutrition – New Course (11 pp.)  Comments: Odd to let second Bachelor’s students take this, but not seniors.  Proposal approved unanimously. PAS 610 Clinical Medicine for Physician Assistants I – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 611 Clinical Medicine for Physician Assistants II – New Course (14 pp.) PAS 612 Clinical Medicine for Physician Assistants III – New Course (14 pp.) PAS 620 Patient Assessment for Physician Assistants I – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 621 Patient Assessment for Physician Assistants II – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 622 Patient Assessment for Physician Assistants III – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 630 Pharmacotherapeutics for Physician Assistants I – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 631 Pharmacotherapeutics for Physician Assistants II – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 632 Pharmacotherapeutics for Physician Assistants III – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 640 Pathophysiology for Physician Assistants I – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 641 Pathophysiology for Physician Assistants II – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 642 Pathophysiology for Physician Assistants III – New Course (13 pp.) PAS 650 Advanced Human Anatomy with Cadaver Lab for Physician Assistants – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 660 Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures for Physician Assistants – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 710 (a,b,d,e,h,i) Clinical Rotation I – New Course (12 pp.) Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 2 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University PAS 720 (c,f,g) Clinical Rotation II – New Course (12 pp.) PAS 730 Graduate Project for Physician Assistants – New Course (10 pp.)  PAS Course Comments: o Remove the “D” grades from syllabi of all of these courses (PAS 610, etc.). o “Pharmacotherapeutics” is misspelled in the PAS 631 proposal. o 610: The description is missing a description of the specific systems dealt with in this course. Was this intentional? o During the 3rd semester, students are taking 19 hours. This seems pretty intense (but they know what they are signing up for). o They list prerequisities as well as co-‐requisites, but most prerequisites are redundant. – e.g., 660 prerequisites are also prerequisites for the corequisites, and so it is redundant to list the prerequisites twice.  All courses for PAS with comments: unanimous approval. PHYASST New Program for the MS in Physician Assistant Studies (119 pp.)  PA Program Comments: o Is the program sustainable when one looks at the cost of keeping a PA lab (with cadavers) and faculty salaries? It seems like their projected costs may be too low. o The prerequisites are generally standard for this program; although they require a microbiology course, this course has no lab requirement. We recommend that the program have a “live” microbiology course with a lab (not an online option for students). o Equal Opportunity List does not include religion as a non-‐
discrimination category (p. 18). o Inconsistency between the program description and what is asked to be validated by the students submitting the application.  Motion to approve with comments: Unanimous approval. College of Technology (3 items; 19 pp.) ELEC 426 Control Systems Engineering – New Course (9 pp.)  Old form. Is this an online course? They need a program revision if they want to make this a required course.  Tabled. IDE 111 Human Factors and Universal Design – Course Revision (5 pp.)  Tabled so Psychology can consider. IDE 322 Mill Work Design and Detailing – Course Revision (5 pp.)  Tabled Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 3 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University College of Business (1 item; 17 pp.) IS 439 Search Marketing Practicum – New Course (17 pp.)  Tabled Tabled Items: College of Arts and Sciences (30 items; 329 pp.) COSC 104 Web Science – New Course (27 pp.) URP 456 Zoning and Land Development Regulation – New Course (10 pp.) URP 459 Planning/Preservation Studio – New Course (10 pp.) PSY 368 Field Experience with Children with Autism – New Course (12 pp.) PSY 375 Applying Behavior Analysis with Children with Autism Lab Experience – New Course (14 pp.) PSY 376 Applying Behavior Analysis with Children with Autism – New Course (17 pp.) PSY 611 Treatment Course Prepracticum – New Course (7 pp.) PSY 625 Behavior Change Methods I: Applied Behavior Analysis – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 627 Behavior Change Methods II: Behavior Therapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 633 Cognitive Neuroscience – New Course (27 pp.) PSY 635 Cognitive Processes – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 643 Behavioral Psychopathology – New Course (24 pp.) PSY 661 Prepracticum in Applied Behavior Analysis – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 671 Prepracticum in Behavior Therapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 672 Modern Behavior Therapies: Theory, Research and Practice – New Course (16 pp.) PSY 721 Treatment of Anxiety Disorders – New Course (16 pp.) PSY 722 Assessment and Treatment of Personality Disorders – New Course (12 pp.) PSY 723 Psychopharmacology – New Course (12 pp.) PSY 731 Prepracticum in Psychotherapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 4 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University PSY 744 Child and Adolescent Psychopathology – New Course (16 pp.) PSY 751 Psychotherapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 752 Intrapersonal Processes in Psychotherapy – New Course (14 pp.) PSY 762 The Wechsler Intelligence Tests – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 770 Personality Evaluation I – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 771 Projective Techniques – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 788 Practicum in Clinical Psychology I – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSY 789 Practicum in Clinical Psychology II – Course Revision (6 pp.) PSYD Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (PhD) – Program Revision (10 pp.) PSYC General Clinical Psychology Program (MS) – Program Revision (6 pp.) PSYB Clinical Behavioral Psychology (MS) – Program Revision (7 pp.) Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 5 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University
