College of Arts and Sciences College Advisory Committee: Science Subcommittee Thursday, June 7, 2012, 3:30 PM 177 Science Complex I. Approval of Minutes from the meeting of May 10, 2012 a. Minutes approved with minor revisions (3 abstentions/3 yeas). II. Old Business College of Business (1 item; 17 pp.) IS 439 Search Marketing Practicum – New Course (17 pp.)  This course was already approved by Interim Associate Provost Longworth, so there is no action to be taken. It is noted that the response of the CoT to this Committee’s earlier comments is inaccurate: this course is not just like courses taken by teachers in the CoE because teacher certification exams are not an additional cost of teacher ed courses nor are the exams required as a major part of the course grade. College of Health and Human Services (2 items, 24 pp.) SPMD 560 Performance Nutrition – New Course (8 pp.) PLEASE USE THE UPDATED COURSE PROPOSAL FORM (NOT THE OLD VERSION ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED). A page of the form is missing and therefore we cannot approve this. Some of the pre-‐requisite courses may also pose problems due to, for example, transfer students. The syllabus did not describe grade construction. In course description, “high level” should be hyphenated. Similar courses in biology may be listed as pre-‐requisites (i.e., BIO 251 or 252 might be equivalent).  Move to return due to lack of complete form, with comments (Clark, Jefferson). Motion to return the proposal passes unanimously. Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 1 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University SPMD 661 Performance Measurement and Assessment – New Course (16 pp.) #8 answer needs a title along with course prefix and number (SPMD 636 “Advanced Testing and Evaluation”) The catalog description needs editing (i.e., “This course will BE entirely online.”) Can you take a course with streaming video without high speed internet? Maybe they should just require access to high speed internet? SPMD 636 sounds like the same course. Why don’t they just open up an online version of this course? How is this course different from SPMD 636?  Move to return with comments. Motion to return the proposal passes unanimously. College of Arts and Sciences (27 items; 282 pp.) NOTE: The following PSY 3XX courses are considered as a package. PSY 368 Field Experience with Children with Autism – New Course (12 pp.) Prerequiste and co-‐requisite listed, but no course number included. PSY 369: Field Experience with Children with Autism Same comments as for PSY 368. PSY 375 Applying Behavior Analysis with Children with Autism Lab Experience – New Course (14 pp.) The catalog description reads more like a justification rather than a description. Co-‐reqs need to be listed explicitly. PSY 101 should be listed as a prerequisite for all courses. Course numbers need to be corrected. PSY 376 Applying Behavior Analysis with Children with Autism – New Course (17 pp.) There are fragmented sentences in the catalog description. The scanned document needs to corrected (part is cut off).  Motion to return the PSY 3XX proposals with comments (Clark, Emal). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 611 Treatment Course Prepracticum – New Course (7 pp.) The catalog description needs work.. List specific courses as pre-‐requiste. Would this be better a pass no-‐pass course?  Move to approve with comments. Motion passes unanimously. PSY 625 Behavior Change Methods I: Applied Behavior Analysis – Course Revision (6 pp.)  Move to approve (Emal, Ikeji). Motion passes unanimously Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 2 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University PSY 627 Behavior Change Methods II: Behavior Therapy – Course Revision (6 pp.)  Move to approve (Emal, Clark). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 633 Cognitive Neuroscience – New Course (27 pp.) The course description needs editing. PSY 635 Cognitive Processes – Course Revision (6 pp.)  Move to approve (Clark, Emal). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 643 Behavioral Psychopathology – New Course (24 pp.) D grades must be removed from the syllabus.  Move to approve with comment. Motion passes unanimously. Motion passes unanimously. PSY 671 Prepracticum in Behavior Therapy – Course Revision (6 pp.)  Move to approve (Ikeji, Booth). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 672 Modern Behavior Therapies: Theory, Research and Practice – New Course (16 pp.) Prerequisites on the form don’t match the prerequisites on the syllabus. For clarification, the prerequisite should be listed more clearly (i.e., 751 Psychotherapy AND 731 Prepracticum in Psychotherapy) OR (“” “”).  Move to approve with comments (Emal, Jefferson). Motion passes unanimously. Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 3 of 5 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University PSY 721 Treatment of Anxiety Disorders – New Course (16 pp.) Prerequisites need to be more explicit. For clarification, the prerequisite should be listed more clearly (i.e., 751 Psychotherapy AND 731 Prepracticum in Psychotherapy) OR (“” “”). Correct the “grading policy” on the syllabus. Should students be able to earn a C+, C. or C-‐ in the course for the GPA (even if they have to re-‐take the course)?  Move to approve with comment. Motion passes unanimously. PSY 722 Assessment and Treatment of Personality Disorders – New Course (12 pp.) Include a grading scale on the syllabus.  Move to approve with comment (Emal, Clark). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 723 Psychopharmacology – New Course (12 pp.) No rationale or justification for the course. Pre-‐requisites need to be listed specifically. D grades cannot be listed for course grades (it’s unclear if the D grades listed in the syllabus only apply to assignments).  Move to return due to a lack of a rationale in proposal form (Clark, Booth). Motion to return the proposal passes unanimously. PSY 731 Prepracticum in Psychotherapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) Did not complete items 5 & 6 on form.  Move to approve with comment. (Emal, Booth). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 744 Child and Adolescent Psychopathology – New Course (16 pp.) No D grades can be earned in the course (should be corrected).  Move to approve with comment. Motion passes unanimously. PSY 751 Psychotherapy – Course Revision (6 pp.) The catalog description should read: “…covered, particularly THOSE related to…”  Move to approve with comment (Emal, Clark). Motion passes unanimously. PSY 752 Intrapersonal Processes in Psychotherapy – New Course (14 pp.) The syllabus course title is not the same as the proposal form course title. The pre-‐requiste is not accurate; PSY 646 is a requirement. Strike “D” grades from the syllabus. Change the E to an F (no F grades yet).  Move to return due to a lack of a rationale in proposal form (Clark, Emal). Motion to return the proposal passes unanimously.
