College of Arts and Sciences College Advisory Committee: Science Subcommittee June 2012 E-‐Meeting (June 12-‐19) Cyberspace I. Old Business NOTE 1: All of the following motions were passed unanimously by a vote of 5-‐0-‐1 (yea, nay, abstain). NOTE 2: In the PSYC program revision, PSY 640 Ethics is listed as a required course. However, PSY 640 is Developmental Psych and is not required for this program according to the current catalog (it looks like they started entering PSY 670 Ethics and got distracted, and then typed 670 on a separate line). Also, at the bottom of the proposed program of study, the number of elective hours needs to be reduced from 17-‐18 to 13-‐14 given the additional required course. College of Arts and Sciences (27 items; 282 pp.) PSY 762: It is noted that the last sentence of the catalog description is “This includes…” and that it should be revised to “This course includes…” They are adding a pre-‐req, but the pre-‐req change box is not checked on the front page, so it may be missed by the folks who put the information into Banner. From the rationale, it sounded like the old tests were no longer used. It sounds like they've actually added content, because the students are still learning to administer etc. the WAIS and WISC tests; they are just also learning more about other tests as well (as I read it). Move to approve with comment (that the catalog description be edited and that the pre-req box be checked). PSY 770: It isn't necessary to list permission of instructor as an option for pre-‐reqs; that's always an option. Move to approve with comment. PSY 771: It isn't necessary to list permission of instructor as an option for pre-‐reqs; that's always an option. Move to approve with comment. PSY 788: There seems to be a major change in pre-‐requisites, but it's not explained in the Science Committee College Advisory Committee Page 1 of 2 College of Arts and Sciences Eastern Michigan University rationale. The reduction in CH needs to be better explained. Move to table. PSY 789: Move to approve. PSY Clinical PSY PHD Revision (10 pp.): It should be stated explicitly that any elective will count on the program if all minimum requirements have been met. Move to approve with comment. PSY Clinical PSY PHD (4 pp.): Although this action to increase the rigor is commendable and driven by the desire to be more consistent with other accredited clinical programs, we express our concern that C grades in individual courses should be possible because EMU allows for them, even if the program requires a higher grade to advance. It should be made explicitly clear to the student what consequences result from earning a grade less than B in a course (e.g., re-‐taking the course, and/or other consequences). Move to approve with comment about our concern for individual course grades. PSYC Revision: It is pointed out that the proposal states that PSY 752 will be an additional required course (in the outline part of the proposal, item A.3.i). Then, the course tabulation shows that students can take PSY 752 “or” (PSY 729 and PSY 791). Move to approve with comment suggesting clarification on this point. [Also see NOTE 2 above.] PSYB Revision: The form must be revised. In the current program, 13 CH of electives are required; this is being changed to 10 to allow for the addition of PSY 600 to the required courses. However, below the tabulated part of the program revision, there are several blank lines to fill in electives taken and the directions here state that 13 CH of electives are to be chosen. This seems to be a clear “leftover” from the previous program that needs to be changed. Move to approve with comment.
