The underlying basis behind this paradox is a skills gap in the areas of science, technology, math, communication and leadership skills necessary to fill vacant positions. A recent report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that American adults scored below the average on a global test compared to adults from other nations in the areas of math, reading and problemsolving technology. This report reinforced a finding from the staffing company, the Manpower Group, which stated that 52% of U.S. employers surveyed say that they have difficulty filling positions because of talent shortages. The Society for Human Resource Management estimates that there could be at least twenty million vacant U.S. jobs by 2020 unless this disparity between the skill sets of available workers and job requirements is brought into balance. This gap between required and available skills of the labor pool represents a severe challenge to the sustainability and competitiveness of American organizations. It is widely acknowledged that, for organizations to successfully resolve this “talent shortage tsunami,” organizational development and human resource professionals must play a central role in assisting employers in bridging the skills gap. Organizational development efforts aid firms in identifying their long-term business strategy. Based on this business strategy, human resource professionals then forecast the skills the organization will require to successfully compete in the future business environment. Once future workforce requirements are established, it is necessary for human resource professionals to assess the skills of the current workforce to predict what skill gaps need to be closed. This gap analysis facilitates implementation of the organization plan through either a training or external staffing strategy, or some combination of each, to develop or acquire the skills needed. It is likely that training as a human resource activity will particularly grow in importance given the current and anticipated shortage of skills necessary for organizations to compete in the workplace. Training professionals will be called upon to work with both new and current employees of the organization to maintain relevant employee skill levels. The centrality of training in keeping employee skills competitive will necessitate frequent interaction between the human resource training professionals and other departments to remain abreast of job changes. The firms that will be most successful in avoiding skill gap shortages will engage in frequent organizational development efforts to forecast what skills the organization will need to remain competitive and proactively work to develop those skills rather than waiting to respond to a skills gap crisis that is thrust upon them. Although a skills gap represents a serious challenge to the sustainability of firms in the global workplace, it also represents a great opportunity for organizational development and human resource professionals to raise their profile by successfully managing human capital to shrink this skills gap through the alignment of human resource strategy and firm strategy that advances achievement of strategic organizational goals. The Director of the MSHROD program, Dr. Fraya Wagner-Marsh, persuaded Ms. Cunningham to enroll in the MSHROD program because of the well-rounded nature of the curriculum and its dual offering of courses in human resources and organizational development. Ms. Cunningham initially entered the MSHROD Certificate Program before transferring to and earning her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management and Organizational Development. Fall 2013 MSHROD Newsletter Page 13 of 16 Ms. Cunningham found all her coursework in the MSHROD program relevant but particularly appreciated the courses in compensation, training, labor relations and diagnostic research methods because of their importance in her position as an equal opportunity specialist. The compensation course was valuable for Ms. Cunningham because her position requires great familiarity with compensation terms. The training course was of assistance to Ms. Cunningham because of her frequent need to modify and enhance training programs at the University of Michigan. The labor relations course was relevant for Ms. Cunningham because of her frequent interaction with labor groups at work. Finally, the diagnostic methods class was valuable to her current job because she needs to interpret statistical findings of work reports and Affirmative Action Plan data. Advice that Ms. Cunningham offers to current students of the MSHROD program is to always retain as much information as possible from the MSHROD program so that it can be translated into the workplace. She also encourages all current students of the program to join the Eastern Michigan Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management in order to network, which helps secure best practices in the human resource profession. Finally, Ms. Cunningham suggests finding a mentor who can help guide your career.
