MSHROD Newsletter
In this version of the MSHROD newsletter, we were very privileged to
interview the new Dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan
University, Dr. Michael Tidwell. A native Californian, Dr. Tidwell became
the Dean of the College of Business effective July, 2012. Prior to
becoming the Dean of Eastern Michigan’s College of Business, Dr.
Tidwell served as the Dean of the College of Business at Bloomsburg
University of Pennsylvania. He received his doctorate from Washington
State University. Dean Tidwell was drawn to EMU’s College of Business
based on his perception that all key foundations were in place to help him
strengthen the College’s bonds to both the business and alumni
communities. The Dean also noted that he was attracted to EMU’s
College of Business because of its noteworthy curriculum and programs
of excellence.
As our Dean, Dr. Tidwell has espoused a key goal of advancing
relationship-building between the College of Business and its students
and alumni. Dr. Tidwell noted that this relationship-building first begins at
the secondary school level by ensuring that the College of Business
maintains a heightened profile and perceptions of quality among
prospective high school students. The relationship then extends to an
excellent academic experience for individuals enrolled as students in the
College of Business. This academic experience produces enhanced
professional development for College of Business students, leading to
greater job opportunities. Central to the Dean’s perspective about the
ties between the College of Business and its students is that their
graduation is only one touchstone in an ongoing, enduring relationship
that has a beneficial impact for both the student and College. The career
success of our alumni is advanced by the professional training they
received while enrolled as students at the College of Business.
Simultaneously, achievements of our alumni in the business community
further embellish the perception of quality of EMU’s College of Business,
thus increasing the visibility of the College among prospective students.
A primary message that Dean Tidwell has for alumni of the College of
Business is to become involved. This involvement can take many forms,
including serving as speakers, considering networking/mentoring
opportunities for students and providing commentary on means by which
the College of Business can facilitate goal attainment for their
organizations.
With respect to the MSHROD program, Dean Tidwell credits its
underlying success to two tenets: excellent leadership, provided by Dr.
Fraya Wagner-Marsh, and its exemplary faculty. Specific advice that
Dean Tidwell has for current students of the MSHROD program is to
continually network. He particularly emphasized the importance of
networking with high-level organizational decision makers since those are
the individuals in positions to most aid professionals in their careers.
Dean Tidwell stated that, for students, networking with such members of
the business community can be facilitated by faculty members and other
representatives of the College. We welcome our new Dean and are
excited by the great sense of passion, collaboration and commitment he
brings to his job, foreshadowing a new and vibrant chapter for the
College of Business at Eastern Michigan University.

Focus on Faculty and Lecturers
Professor Cheryl Aubuchon presented her paper, “Networking: A Path to Partnerships,” in
April in Traverse City at the State of Michigan MAETC/MAACE conference. In addition, she
presented a paper on “Retention and Persistence by Older Adults in Master’s Degree Programs”
at the UPCEA Regional Conference in Kansas City, Missouri in September.
Dr. Nick Blanchard has announced his retirement from EMU at the end of the Fall 2012
semester. His immediate plans are to spend the winter in Florida and enjoy NOT shoveling any
snow. He wants to let everyone know how much he has enjoyed working with all alumni, as well
as his current students in his MGMT628 course. The fifth edition of Dr. Blanchard’s text,
“Effective Training: Systems, Strategies and Practices,” was published this last summer. He does
plan to keep working on future editions while enjoying the Florida sun.
Dr. Jean Bush-Bacelis and MSHROD graduate (now alumna) Christy Hicks co-taught a course,
“Cross-cultural business communication in Japan,” on-site in Hikone, Japan, in May.
Undergraduate and graduate students from EMU and several other universities completed the
course, which included experiential exercises, such as a scavenger hunt in Hikone, as well as
multiple company visits in Nagoya and Kyoto. Dr. Bush-Bacelis also presented her paper,
“Teaching learners to apply cultural knowledge when communicating with a Latino audience,” at
the Association for Business Communication European convention in Nijmegen, Netherlands, in
June. In addition, she presented her paper with Christy Hicks, “Using Hofstede’s dichotomies for
intercultural business communication in Japan: Demonstrating knowledge-building,” at the 77th
Annual International Convention of the Association for Business Communication in Hawaii in
October.
Dr. Chris Day has been consulting on the following projects: a local hospital designing
behavioral-based interview tools for interns; a federally regulated organization focusing on
employee satisfaction issues; a healthcare organization facing change issues; a major automotive
company requiring teambuilding; a non-profit firm planning strategy building; a major employer
training new managers who are supervising former peers; and a non-profit firm enhancing
leadership. In addition, she has continued her executive coaching and will offer a SHRM
workshop during the winter semester on “Working with Multiple Managers: Process and
Relationship Preservation.” Dr. Day reported that the Traverse City 2012 summer class was
fabulous, focusing on “Building EQ in the Organization.” Activities included case studies,
research, and scenarios, as well as fudge, fireworks and sunsets. People stayed in dorms, hotels,
lodges, rented condos (oh, yes, some even stayed with relatives!!), and campgrounds. She

MSHROD Alumni Interview: Bernie Swartout
By: Dr. Eric Schulz
MSHROD alumnus Bernie Swartout serves as the Director of Compensation and
Executive Personnel. Mr. Swartout is a 1992 graduate of the MSHROD program and
also received his B.A. from Eastern Michigan University in Health Administration. When
Mr. Swartout started the MSHROD program, he was employed at St. Joseph Hospital.
He joined Ford while enrolled in the MSHROD program and has been there since 1991.
Mr. Swartout has served in a number of human resource and organizational
development capacities while at Ford, including business operations, labor relations,
organizational development and change, and compensation. Mr. Swartout has served
in the compensation function for the past 9 years and attests that his academic
experiences were invaluable in preparing for his career at Ford. The primary lessons
Mr. Swartout learned from the MSHROD program were that every HR activity is an
organizational change effort and that as a human resource professional you can bring
your expertise to any such organizational change effort on an ongoing basis.
For his entire course of study while a student in the MSHROD program, Mr. Swartout
had the following four instructors: Rick Camp, Greg Hucsczo, Denise Tanguay and
Mary Vielhaber. Mr. Swartout lauded each of these four instructors for their excellence
in their specialties, as well as their superb instructional skills. Advice that Mr. Swartout
conveys to current students of the MSHROD program is to always try to combine the
segments of your coursework together to develop a coherent whole out of what you are
learning so that it can be translated into the workplace. Mr. Swartout states that
opportunities to take content from the MSHROD and translate it into the workplace can
come from any student forum, including a class, internship or practicum.
