MEC/CCLC October 18 2002 Michigan State University East Lansing, MI Community College Updates Alpena Community College All is well but one challenge is that freshman enrollments in engineering are down. Perhaps students want to go away to school or just are not interested in engineering. Delta College Enrollment is steady. Delta offers 2 Introduction to Engineering courses and enrollment in them is maxed out, students needed overrides this semester. Numbers overall are holding steady. Even though Dow Chemical is in the neighborhood, Delta has very few students interested in Chemical Engineering. New buildings are finally going up, residential construction lab and others. Don Holtzi is working on a pre-engineering program that would offer more engineering course but not get confer a degree. Courses such as dynamics, mechanics, and materials might be offered. Grand Rapids Community College Enrollments are up overall. Calculus 1 is as high as its ever been. The number who declared Engineering in this class has decreased. GRCC has a lot of undeclared students this year. Physics enrollments are up as well. GRCC is trying to create the presence that they do have transfer programs and not just two years degree programs. The MECCCLC matric exists as an interactive devise on the GRCC website. From the main GRCC page, go to Career Pathways, the Engineering. Each college is listed on the matrix and can have a live link if they send the appropriate information (links) to Nancy Forrest. Henry Ford Community College Henry Ford recently approved an Associates degree program in Science and Preengineering. They are in the process of creating an Introduction to Engineering course. Kellogg Community College Calculus and Pre-Engineering enrollments went down in 1999 and haven’t come back but overall enrollments are booming. Central Michigan University Enrollments are at an all time high, over 28,000 with 19,000 on campus and the rest at remote sites. They received over 10,000 applications and admitted 3500 freshmen. Retention is up. They have fewer international students this year and 1100 transfer students. CMU has 3 new deans, a new library facility, a new health professions facility which will open in a year, and 3 new dorms under construction. The vehicle design program now has a masters degree and the bachelor degree in that program has over 600 students. Pre-engineering students number 90, down from 160. Pre-architecture has jumped through the roof. CMU is working on an Engineering design graphics articulation and passed out an abstract explaining this process. Eastern Michigan University Eastern saw record enrollments this year, over 25,000 students. Their degree in Engineering Physics has gone through some changes. A Physics capstone course has been added with a design/experimental focus. They are up to 60 Physics majors and are interested in revising their pre-engineering program. Four Year Institutions with Baccalaureate Programs in Engineering University of Detroit - Mercy Enrollments are steady. Freshman enrollments are up 10%. A recent fund raising project was successful. Coop and placement are doing ok but not as strong as in the past. They still have a 4 year coop program. US News and World Report put U of D in the top tier of Mid-West University’s in their category. U of D now has wireless buildings, programming in C++, Autocad plus ideas (ME’s will be required to take CATIA, the rest autocad), and online registration. Students are admitted directly into their major. Minorities and females make up about 30% of enrollments in engineering. Grand Valley State University GVSU has started an interdisciplinary degree in Engineering: environmental and biomedical. Center of Health Professions will open next year. They have a 5 year bachelors/masters program in Manufacturing. GVSU is seeing growth in Engineering enrollments. Transfer student numbers are up more than freshman numbers. They have a little over 22,000 students on the two campus. They are trying to slow down growth by raising admissions standards. Engineering graphics course will become a true CAD/CAM design course and utilize rapid prototyping equipment. Programming language is moving to C++. All Engineering activities will be at the downtown campus beginning next year. Kettering University US News and World Reports ranked Kettering’s Industrial Engineering program #1. Mechanical is up to 4 from 7. The school is up in the rankings as well. Kettering now has lighted ball fields, lighted walking paths, a level playing field, and new student apartment housing (which doubles the existing space). Several design programs are developing including collaborations with Ford and GM, E-design and E-manufacturing, combustion, Denzel manufacturing systems and design, Rockwell automation, jet engine program for Mechanical, wind tunnel, laser Doppler velosometric equipment, pace grant 88 million dollars (lots of in kind giving), NSF funded grant for women between junior and senior year, center for excellence for teaching and learning. Their new concentration in biomedical engineering is growing, as are the crash safety and study abroad programs. The Study Abroad programs are mainly in Europe and are one academic term. Classes are taught in English. Students can spend two more terms working. The Mechanical and environmental chemistry building will be moved into this spring. Transfer student scholarships are available, as are admission visits. Lake Superior State University Lake Superior State has a new president. Enrollment is steady with 300 in Engineering. Robotics is a strong area of interest. Lake Superior State offers opportunities for undergraduate research, as well as a strong sense of community, Lawrence Technological University Lawrence Tech has recently completed some new student housing, a 232 bed facility. They are in their 3rd year of a laptop initiative offering wireless internet services. The cost has been rolled into tuition which allows for better for financial aid. New programs include the Lear Corporation Entrepreneurial program, which is a part of the Engineering program. It does not add any additional credit hours but is a 10-15 credit hours modification of current courses. There is a good deal of student in this program A global engineering program to Germany offers classes and coop opportunity. Campus visit day is Saturday November 9. There are also Community College visits planned in November. These will be evening presentations with admissions and engineering people. Scholarships are available for transfer students in various amounts.
