Michigan Engineering Colleges-Community Colleges Association
Annual Meeting Notes
October 19, 2012
Western Michigan University
We were welcomed by three Western Michigan University leaders:
Dr. Dunn, President
Dr. Keith Herit, Vice Provost
Dr. Osama Abudayyeh, Associate Dean Engineering
There were about 9 new attendees at this meeting.
Better organization description was suggested as “MEC-CCA” is not publicly recognized and
doesn’t appear in web searches.
Topic: Transfer Guides and Best Practice Policies regarding transfer students
WMU:
-
Gen-Eds requirements were explained
(http://catalog.wmich.edu/content.php?catoid=18&navoid=632)
Suggested students should take 3 gen-eds upper course not 5.
Cover 8 gen-eds areas
Need input from Community Colleges to have credit transfers up to date
Comment: There’s an issue with students, they are not taking classes because those aren’t
transferable. There’s no standard as every department updates their own transfer equivalent
database.
Comment: Need guidelines for courses #s, some transferable courses are on upper level (3XXX)
but they could also be lower level (1XXX).
Reply: Renaming #s on courses is troublesome; bigger issue is to evaluate course
content between colleges.
Reply: Hard to control college ego when naming courses, maybe a solution is to compile
a group of same level courses to be used for equivalency and transferability between
colleges.

Displayed and discussed Michigan Transfer Network (MTN) - It’s an administrative
problem to update both their own site transfer guide and MTN
Some go college by college checking if their transfer list is updated
Another problem could be students plan with current transfer policies, but they can
change after 4 years and is hard to do transfer equivalency, maybe credit qty was
changed and they have to repeat class to be transferable. Need to expand transfer
policies.
Some colleges base their transfer guides from WMU as they don’t have on their own.
But students are not aware of what’s transferable and don’t know what courses to take;
they need to contact their respective department and check annually for changes.
Admissions office shouldn’t do course evaluation; if it’s not in database they have to
check departments for transfer equivalency.
Michigan Tech worked on own interactive website transfer guide to show students
equivalent courses to many other colleges. (Transfer Guide, Transfer Equivalency
Listings); gave demo
WSU gave examples of their on-line transfer info.
UM-D and UDM had hand-outs
Transfer Resources for the Michigan Community College Student brochure distributed
created by MI Association of Collegiate Registrars &Admissions Officers (MACRAO)
ABET is too strict and is constantly evolving
Advanced Placement is not easily found even if its publicly available

Entered 1st phase of accreditation process through AQIP. Data has been collected over
last 4 years, will serve as basis for future accreditation visits to determine key areas:
Communication, Technology, Mathematics, Thinking Critically and Creatively, Acting
Responsibly, Managing Information, Social and Cultural Awareness and Work
Cooperatively
CAD enrollment is up 60%, Engineering Enrollment is up 25% over this time last year
CAD classes: 5 sections with 24 students, will not cancel even if 1 student is attending
Business looking for grads in Design Programs with specific CAD skills is up. GM backed
off decision to only pursue designers with engineering degrees, meeting with Oakland
high schools and community colleges to spread word on skills desired
Increased articulation efforts with local high school to improve enrollment, freshman
college age population decreasing
Articulation with area Universities granting bachelor degree in Technology could use
more work
