From Village to Factory—Culture Change in Southern Chile
Off-Campus Course Scholarship Opportunity
Sponsored by the Berry Center
Deadline: March 11th at 4pm
The Berry Center will sponsor four students at $1,000 each to participate in Professor Anton Daughters’ From
Village to Factory—Culture Change in Southern Chile Anthropology 258 course to take place in the Chiloé islands
during Block 5 of 2012.
This course will examine the connections between global economic forces and the local livelihoods of a community
by putting students in contact with rural farmers and fishermen in Southern Chile whose lives have undergone
significant changes as a result of economic upheavals of the last two decades. Students will travel to the
Archipelago of Chiloé—a region of Chile that until the 1980s was largely disconnected from the global economy—
to understand how recent demand for farm-raised salmon in the U.S. has impacted the economic standing, cultural
heritage and collective identity of rural people there.
Scholarship recipients will be determined from the applicant pool by the International and Off-Campus Studies
Oversight Committee on the basis of the following criteria: (a) demonstrated financial need (b) grade point average
