Anthropology 258: From Village to Factory—Culture Change in Southern Chile Off-Campus Course Scholarship Opportunity Sponsored by the Berry Center Deadline: March 11th at 4pm The Berry Center will sponsor four students at $1,000 each to participate in Professor Anton Daughters’ From Village to Factory—Culture Change in Southern Chile Anthropology 258 course to take place in the Chiloé islands during Block 5 of 2012. This course will examine the connections between global economic forces and the local livelihoods of a community by putting students in contact with rural farmers and fishermen in Southern Chile whose lives have undergone significant changes as a result of economic upheavals of the last two decades. Students will travel to the Archipelago of Chiloé—a region of Chile that until the 1980s was largely disconnected from the global economy— to understand how recent demand for farm-raised salmon in the U.S. has impacted the economic standing, cultural heritage and collective identity of rural people there. Scholarship recipients will be determined from the applicant pool by the International and Off-Campus Studies Oversight Committee on the basis of the following criteria: (a) demonstrated financial need (b) grade point average (c) application essay addressing the students’ interest in the course, and how participation in this project will enhance their academic program.
