Also, please describe or provide a link to program admissions policies that allow
students to enter with credit for prior graduate work, and the expected implications for
time to completion. Please indicate NA if not applicable:
Students who enter the program with a clinical psychology master’s degree tend to finish
in about five years on average compared to six years for those who enter with a
bachelor’s degree. The Doctoral Training Committee reviews each potential transfer
course for equivalency and approval for admitted applicants. Information about the exact
number of transfer credits that will be accepted is not available prior to admission. See
http://www.emich.edu/psychology/forms/doc-phd-information-packet.pdf for more
detailed information about options for transfer credit.

Admissions Information
The expectation is that successful applicants will have at least the 50th percentile on each section of the
GRE. Additionally, students admitted typically have had at least a 4.5 (out of 6.0) on the written section of
the GRE. The undergraduate GPA of students admitted to the program is usually above 3.50 on a 4.00 scale.
All applicants must have successfully completed 20 credit hours in psychology that include courses in
General Psychology, Statistics, Abnormal Psychology, and Experimental Psychology/Research Methods.
In addition to GRE and GPA scores, student match with our program's philosophy and with faculty research
programs is an important consideration. Potential applicants should consider the interests and expertise of
our faculty and compare them to their own educational goals. Even the best student would be ill served if
accepted to a program without mentors who could facilitate and share their interests. The EMU Clinical
Psychology Program follows the scientist-practitioner model of training.
Research experience is weighed heavily in the decision making process. Students accepted to the program
typically have prior experience in research.
Our faculty covers a broad range of theoretical orientations toward clinical practice. Most students find
ample opportunities to match their clinical interests with clinical placements available at EMU. However,
students with strong and specific clinical interests should evaluate whether EMU offers relevant
experiences.

Doctoral Fellowships
The Graduate School at Eastern Michigan University covers the costs of all tuition and registration
fees for current doctoral students in Clinical Psychology. Specifically, students receive 90 credits of
tuition and registration fees. Students entering with a master’s degree will have their tuition prorated
based on the number of transfer credits accepted. Students entering the doctoral program after
completing two years in one of our clinical master’s programs, will receive 60 credits of tuition. In
addition to tuition and registration fees, all admitted students receive an annual stipend of $16,500
per year. Students entering with a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree from another institution
will receive this stipend for their first four years and students from one of our clinical master’s
programs will receive this stipend for their first three years. Students are responsible for the tuition
and fees beyond their doctoral fellowship including the internship year. Doctoral fellowships include
a parking pass and extended library privileges.
Current students cover the New Graduate Student Fee ($125) once during the first semester of
enrollment (see Program Costs table above) and their own health insurance (the University offers an
optional low cost plan). More extensive health coverage is also available for an additional cost.
Doctoral students are also eligible for loans from the Financial Aid Office.
The graduation fee for all students is currently $100.00 and doctoral students are responsible for this
fee when applying for graduation with their master’s and/or doctorate.
For more information on the tuition and fee schedule, go to: http://www.emich.edu/sbs/calc.php
Starting with Fall 2016 admission, doctoral students will be responsible for paying registration fees
up to $750 per semester for a full course load (12 credits).
