The Consultant Cole Library and The Center for Teaching and Learning Fall, 2010 Volume 4, Issue 1 New Space in the Library Teaching With Entertaining Educational Technology New group study space has been created on the fourth floor bridge by moving the current periodicals to fallow space on the third floor. A large whiteboard enhances the collaborative possibilities, and a smaller white board is available on the third floor. New books are now on the innermost-facing shelves of the current periodical ranges, and the Teaching and Learning collection is now housed on the shelving outside of conference room 310. We hope that the new arrangement of materials highlights those resources and stimulates increased use. FYS Student Showcase Because we are so excited by the wonderful work your students are doing this year in your FYS courses, we would like to offer an opportunity for FYS professors to submit top student work to an online showcase. Cole Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning will publish this work in a prominent place on our website. You may submit up to three pieces of student work (e.g., papers, group projects, websites, digitized projects, creative works, etc.). We will contact the students for more information about their projects and let them know the details of having their work showcased. Works that are showcased may be reprinted or posted subsequently with another publication. Please submit work to Jen Rouse by October 22 for publication in Block 3. Check out the newest gadget at Cole Library— Mimio! Mimio is a portable interactive whiteboard system and will soon be available for faculty use. The whiteboard capture tool, MimioInteractive, records what you write on the whiteboard and allows you to save it to a PowerPoint file. The wireless pad, MimioPad, works with your classroom computer to allow you and your students to edit a document together from anywhere in the room. To learn more, contact Matt Zhorne. Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest. - Lady Bird Johnson What’s new in Cole Library? The Teaching and Learning Collection On the shelves outside of conference room 310 is a collection of books that address issues regarding teaching and learning. Here you will find books on advising first year students, intervention to facilitate student success, facilitating collaboration, and understanding quiet students. Additional topics include assessment, writing rubrics, developing a learning-centered syllabus, and fostering reflection. A few titles that might be particularly interesting include: Academic Advising: New Insights for Teaching and Learning in the First Year Teaching and Learning 378.194 Ac122 2007 Between Speaking and Silence: A Study of Quiet Students Teaching and Learning 378.125 R245b 2009 Collaborative Learning: Higher Education, Interdependence, and the Authority of Knowledge Teaching and Learning 371.395 B83c 1993 (This includes chapters on writing, peer tutoring, and instructional technology, among its other intriguing topics.) The Consultant Page 2 Your library is your portrait. - Holbrook Jackson Fall CAT Schedule Conversations About Teaching sessions offer an opportunity for faculty to gather and discuss topics related to the classroom. Cornell colleagues will open each conversation with comments, questions, or a brief presentation and then invite participants to join in. Unlikely Partners: The Writing Studio and The Quantitative Reasoning Studio While the Writing Studio and the Quantitative Reasoning Studio may appear to offer very different services, consultants from each studio often team up to help students in Stats, Psychology, Sociology, Biology, or any other course where assignments combine writing and data. By having a conference with both a writing consultant and a quantitative reasoning consultant, students maximize their time and are able to see how writing and computation are actually related. Typically these joint conferences are performed by the professional consultants during the day but students can take advantage of this service in the evenings by making an appointment with peer consultants in both the Writing Studio and the Quantitative Reasoning Studio. Please encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity! New Cole Library Staff Conversations take place on the first Friday of the block at 11:30 in Cole 108. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. Friday, October 1: An Open Discussion with the Dean on Student Learning at Cornell.
